J.R. GENTRY GENERATES 1st WIN IN WILD LAKEVILLE LATE MODEL FINISH

By M.D. Swanger
Lakeville, Ohio Friday, September 3, 1999

It was a script that Hollywood writers could not come up with as it was a fantastic finish in the American Payroll Advance late model 40 lap feature on Pitt Stop Exhaust Trophy night at Lakeville Speedway. It all started out with Ryan Markham grabbing the lead from his outside front row starting spot and for the first 38 laps it was a basic run of the mill race as Rick Moore made a couple of challenges on Markham with Gentry keeping pressure on Moore for second. Following those three were the three points leaders as Jim Cushing, Mark Uhler, and Charlie Duncan had a heated battle going for fourth and trying to pick up points on each other as they flipped-flopped positions lap after lap. After a yellow flag on lap 38 for Roger Sims and Tom Conley, things got crazy. On the restart, the 3 points leaders became tangled up to bring out the caution again. While fenders and equipment were checked out for them, Markham's left rear lost air and he went to the pits for new rubber and it gave the lead to Rick Moore. On this restart, Markham came out of the pits following the field but spun in turn four to return the yellow flag again as Ron Stuart and Conley also collected each other. As the green flag flew this restart, Moore slid high in turn one and that opened the door for J.R. to go low and take the lead down the back stretch and then pull away for his first late model win of his career. The Wooster driver pulled the GDI Chassis, Dino's Drive Thru, Worthington Auto Sales and Gentry Automotive sponsored #14 into the Budweiser victory circle to pocket the $2,000 winners share. Moore finished second as he ran out of gas at the line while Rick Bond continued his hot streak in a third place finish. Markham recovered to finish fourth and Mark Uhler survived to take fifth. In the Goodyear Tire Points standings, Duncan's sixth place finish and Cushing's ninth place run will put Duncan just 5 points behind Cushing with next Friday and Saturday's races wrapping up the points battle. Moore, Markham, and Duncan posted heat wins as Alan Baker topped the last chance race.
Mansfield's Wayne Maffett Jr. won the last chance race and then started tenth in the Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'A' main and in 6 laps was leading the pack and went on to chalk up his third win at Lakeville in his Hall's Auto Sales #240. Joe Ryan Jr. held off Rob Metz for the second spot as Ty Myers and Andy Coblentz filled out the top five. Heat winners were Metz and Dave Haven Sr.
Charlie Van Sickle set the pace for the opening two circuits of the Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'B' main but Paul Brown took over on lap three but his #73 conked out going down the back stretch. Van Sickle reinherited the lead but Ashland's Scott Clantz came from the back of the field after an early spin and took over the point on the last lap to record his seventh win in the Willard Maching, Club 42, #07c. Van Sickle's second place finish wrapped up his 'B' class points championship. Shawn Scott, Terrence Metz, and John Jones rounded out the top five. Kristin Uhler and Clantz claimed heat wins.
It was another Ironman 100 for the Rick Moore Motors Cruisers as Mike Finger lead the early portion of the marathon before transmission woes put him back in the pits and then the rest of the race was a Fryed event. Chet, Bob and Craig Fry had the Family Feud going as Todd Sherwin tried to spoil things but he dropped with mechanical problems as Craig Fry and his Pitt Stop Exhaust #777 held off Bob Fry's last challenge to collect the $600 first place money. Tim Myers stormed back from an early race spin to take third ahead of Dan Rummes and Rex Trussell.
After leading the first five laps of the 4-Cylinder Cruiser main, the left front wheel broke on Charles Henney's #92 giving the top spot to Mike Adkins but his time at the top was short-lived as Sugar Creek's Mark Adkins blew by to record his fifth win. Jamey Rose ran third in front of Todd Kanzig and Bruce Huston. Chalking up heat wins were Jimmy Cushing Jr., Mark Adkins, and Henney.
Next week-end will be a double duty week-end as all the classes will be in action Friday and Saturday nights as it will be the final two points races of the season. Race time at Lakeville will be 7:30 p.m. on Friday and 7:00 p.m. on Saturday.
