ROARING KNOB RACEWAY PARK

9/12/99

By Judy Gower  (724) 329-0306

MARKLEYSBURG, PA…..Greencastle's Tom Myers was crowned "King of the Knob" Sunday at Roaring Knob Raceway Park as he dominated the 40 lap late model event sponsored by Lowe's of Uniontown. Also winning their respective season ending special events were Tom Humberson of Grantsville, MD who picked up the Hoosier Tire Wild Thing 20 lap pure stock race, and Somerset's Lynn Knepper who landed the win in the Team One Chevrolet "Buzz the Knob 20" for the DWARF cars.

It took several tries to get the first lap completed, but finally the twenty-four car field settled down with Tom Myers taking command. Bo Feathers quickly slipped into second with Jeff Thomas and Bob Wearing Jr in hot pursuit. Myers entered heavy traffic by lap ten, and he maneuvered through the congestion masterfully, as Feathers tried to close in. A lap sixteen caution regrouped the field, and gave Myers some short-lived breathing room. With open track ahead, Myers, Feathers, Thomas, Wearing and Mel Minnick Jr. ran nose to tail for the next few laps. As the race continued, the smooth, experienced Myers once again used the lapped traffic to his advantage, and he held off the efforts of Feathers for the popular win, his fifth of the season at Roaring Knob. Minnick got by both Wearing Jr and Thomas in the late stages of the event to finish third. Wearing was edged out of fourth by Thomas, and following Wearing at the stripe was Corey Conley, Rob King, Chad McDougal, Shane Quatro and Russ Kolesar. The three heat races were won by Tom Myers, Thomas and Feathers. Nolan Dalton experienced mechanical problems during hot laps and was the only late model unable to start the 40 lap special race.

Tom Humberson is two for two at Roaring Knob this season, making his second visit another winning one. The pure stock special event was all Humberson, as he grabbed the lead at the start, and held off a persistent Chuck Capana for sixteen laps. Lonnie Hoffman, up from twelfth, finally got around Capana on the next lap, and he set his sights on the leader, but Humberson remained in control and went on to easily win the 20 lap event. Hoffman settled for second with Jimmy Shaffer getting by Capana for third, while Steve Sickles drove a steady race to finish in the fifth spot. Six through ten were Mike Kepple, George Hilliard, Keith Regan, Bob Singo and Jim Byers. Winning the three heat races were Capana, Humberson and Bart Tressler.

The caution filled race for the DWARF cars saw five yellows in the first nine laps. Early leader John Mollick and second running Lynn Knepper got together in turn four with Knepper continuing but Mollick unable to go. As an unhappy Mollick saw his race end, Knepper found himself inheriting the lead with Shingleton and a fast moving Jeff Davis right on his heels. Knepper held off the challenges of Greg Shingleton, then John Cogar, and finally Davis again, as the drivers juggled and swapped positions during the race. When the marathon event finally concluded, the order behind winner Knepper was Davis, Cogar, Jeff Barclay and Eric Hay. The second group of five was made up of Ron Nestor, Eric Stoltz, Frank Dunkle, Greg Shingleton and Tom Showman.

The 1999 Roaring Knob Track Champions were honored during the race program. Bob Wearing Jr. is the Late Model Point Champion, Wayne Jordan picked up the honors in the Pure Stocks, while Larry Kugel topped the points in the E-Mods, and John Cogar was crowned the DWARF car champion. The conclusion of Sunday's program brought the 1999 racing season to a close at Roaring Knob Raceway Park. The Markleysburg oval will return in 2000 with Saturday racing.
