5 DRIVERS CLAIM LAKEVILLE SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS

By M.D. Swanger
Lakeville, Ohio Saturday, September 11,1999

It was two nights of racing at Lakeville Speedway this week-end as the Goodyear Tire season long points battle came to an end with action on McClelland Engines Trophy night on Friday and American Payroll Advance Ltd. Trophy night on Saturday night.
Defending track champion Jim Cushing started the week-end with just a 5 point lead over Charlie Duncan and it did not last long as Duncan drew the low pill to start on the pole of the 25 lap feature and Cushing  had to start 17th as he finished back in his heat race and did not have a chance to redraw for the feature. Third place in the points and still alive for the championship was Mark Uhler but his luck was as bad as Cushing's as he finished the heat behind Cushing and started 19th. Duncan went flag to flag for his fourth win of the season aboard the Twinks Village Pub, Reed's Painting, and JCS Enterprises #17 as Ryan Markham worked his way up from his 6th starting spot to take second. Matt Aber ran third as veteran Don Gross posted a fourth place finish and 17 year old Doug Drown filled out the top five. With Cushing's tenth place finish, Duncan would take a 45 point advantage in Saturday nights feature and would start on the pole again with Cushing alongside. Cushing's run on Saturday night was short as on the second lap the 00c broke and went into the guardrail in turn one, receiving considerable damage to end his night. Just like the night before, Markham stormed through the field from his 7th starting position as he and Duncan ran side by side for a half a dozen laps before the Ashland driver and his Stu's Place, T-C Machining, and Met's Auto Supply #5m went low and slipped by with four laps to go to chalk up win #5 at Lakeville. Mark Uhler's third place finish moved him into second in the final points standings ahead of Cushing. The Moore brothers ran fourth and fifth as Rick came from 14th and Johnny moved up from his 6th place start.
Mansfield's Wayne Maffett Jr. was not in the battle for the championship of the Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'A' class but that didn't stop him from working his way through the pack on both nights to capture his fifth and sixth wins in the Hall's Auto Sales #240. In Fridays main, Kelly Kaufman set the pace for the first five laps before giving way to Rob Metz who led it the the final lap when Maffett Jr. powered by. On Saturday, Ty Myers led the way for the first 12 circuits before Maffett Jr. moved by. Kelly Kaufman needed just to show up on both nights to claim his 'A' season championship crown, which he did. The Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'B' class championship was locked up two weeks ago as Lakeville's Charlie Van Sickle had the wraps on the crown. Jerry Adkins led all the way in Fridays feature but was disqualified after inspection and the win went to Creston's Kristin Uhler in the Ray's Garage & Winar Connections #u2. Scott Clantz of Ashland controlled the caution filled feature on Saturday to post his 8th win in the Club 42, Willard Machine #07c. Gary Hensel Sr. claimed the championship in the Rick Moore Motors Cruisers as points leader Chet Fry had his car claimed Friday before the feature and could not come up with a ride for Saturday.  Hensel Sr. and the Mike's Custom Exhaust #c4 picked up his 6th win on Friday night as Todd Sherwin led the opening 8 laps before a wheel came off the #41. The shoe was on the other foot Saturday night as Hensel led the first 6 trips around when a flat tire short-circuited his run and Duffy Smith of Massillon and the Hensel Asphalting #68 ended up in the Budweiser victory circle for the first time this year. It was wild action in the 4-Cylinders Friday night as Mike Adkins led the first 9 and 3/4 laps as he started  pushing through the corners on the last 2 laps and that allowed Jimmy Cushing Jr. to close in and coming out of turn 4 on the last lap they made a lot of contact and  Cushing Jr. came across the finish line first but sideways to pocket his first win ever.  On Saturday night, Mark Adkins went all the way in the lead for the feature win and when Randy Harmon was DQ'ed for rough driving, Adkins of Sugar Creek picked up enough points for the championship.
