SCHLIEPER RIDES HIGH FOR HAUBSTADT WIN; McDOWELL RETAKES POINT LEAD

HAUBSTADT, IN - Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI won Sunday night's 75-lap
United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series main
event at Tri-State Speedway, and while collecting the $10,000 top prize,
showed that he is a better rodeo cowboy than he is a gymnast.

After one of the more entertaining Hav-A-Tampa races of the season,
Schlieper climbed from his Performance Roofing Rayburn/Monte Carlo that
during the race appeared more like a bucking bronco than a dirt late model.
In beginning the victory celebration, Schlieper stood on top of the driver's
door, fell over backwards, performed a half somersault, and landed on his
feet.

Schlieper had to be a tired driver, as he wrestled his Performance Roofing
Rayburn/Monte Carlo around the top of the ¼-mile clay oval so high he tagged
the wall twice in the final ten laps of the race.

The race featured Schlieper rim riding, while challengers Dale McDowell of
Rossville, GA and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY ran the bottom groove.  The
bottom even dropped out of the bottom groove, as several drivers began
pushing the low groove into the infield, forcing UDTRA to throw a caution
flag on lap 66, and place cones to mark the end of track and the start of
the infield.

McDowell finished second in the Dover Cylinder Heads GRT/Monte Carlo, and
retook the point lead from Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR, who finished
12th.  McDowell now has a 15-point lead over Wallace.

Francis finished third in the Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo.  Ray Cook
of Brasstown, NC took the fourth spot in the Youngblood Concrete
GRT/Mustang, and Kevin Claycomb of Vincences, IN claimed fifth in his
GRT/Monte Carlo.

Sixth through tenth spots respectively went to Scott Bloomquist of
Mooresburg, TN, Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR, Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN,
Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN, and Jim Curry of Norman, IN.

There were fierce battles for position throughout the 24-car field during
the event, with four lead changes at the start/finish line, but several more
in other locations around the track that weren't officially counted.

Schlieper took the lead at the drop of the green flag from his outside
front row starting spot, while polesitter Francis took the inside line.  The
lead duo raced side-by-side for the first five laps and quickly caught the
tail enders in the field to begin the lapping process.

When Schlieper had to leave the cushion on the high side to lap cars,
Francis took advantage of Schlieper's weakness to take the lead on lap nine.
Once Schlieper cleared the lapped traffic, he went back upstairs to chase
down Francis, and he retook the lead on lap 11.

The leaders encountered more lapped traffic on lap 20, and when Schlieper
had lower his racing groove again, Francis was there to reclaim the lead on
lap 25.  Francis and Schlieper continued their side-by-side battle for the
point until the caution flag came out on lap 42 when John Gill of Mitchell,
IN stalled in turn four.

"As long as I could stay on the high side, I was fine because that's where
my car was good," Schlieper said.  "When I had to go inside, the car wasn't
good there, and Francis was able to get by me."

Another caution flag on lap 45 for a spin involving Bloomquist and Randy
Korte of Highland, IL in turn one, put the field in single file order for
the restart.  They didn't stay that way long when the green flag came back
out.

When the field went back to green, Schlieper put the pressure on Francis,
and grabbed the lead for good on lap 46, as McDowell moved up to third spot.
McDowell passed Francis for second on lap 55, and then used the bottom
groove to chase down Schlieper.

"My car was real good until the second caution flag, and while we were
running under caution, my right-rear tire glazed over," Francis said.
"After that, the tire was never the same to keep up with Schlieper, and then
Dale got by me for second."

Schlieper couldn't move any higher on the track because of the concrete
retaining wall, but McDowell kept getting lower on the track, as several
cars pushed the inside groove below the tire markers between the track and
infield.  McDowell was able to get inside of Schlieper on lap 62, and the
pair raced side-by-side for three laps in heavy lapped traffic.

On lap 62, UDTRA officials called for caution flag to place orange cones on
the inside of the track to keep cars from improving their positions by
running through the infield.    When the field went back to green, Schlieper
had a clear outside groove all to himself, and McDowell could not gain
enough momentum to challenge for the lead.

"That late caution flag was not good for me," McDowell said.  "But after all
of the bad luck we've had earlier this weekend with a broken rear end while
leading the race in Florence, and then a flat tire on our hauler getting
here this morning, a second place finish isn't bad."

Gill's machine was the only car to drop out of the race and despite
fender-rubbing tight-quarters racing, 23 cars were around at the finish.

The next event for the HAT series will be this Friday and Saturday night at
Rome (GA) Speedway.  Friday night will be Family Night with a $10 adult
general admission ticket, $5 for students 12-17, and children 11 and under
