HAV-A-TAMPAOctober 1, 1999 WALLACE AND McDOWELL IN HOT CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE IN MUSKOGEE
MUSKOGEE, OK – Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA, Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA, Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR, and Rick Eckert of York,PA won 12-lap Borla Muffler Heat Races Friday night for the $20,000-to-win OctoberFast 100 at Muskogee Speedway. Wallace and McDowell are battling for the 1999 United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series championship. Wallace entered the event just 38 points ahead of McDowell. To open the evening, McDowell, driving the Glenn’s Auto Parts GRT/Monte Carlo, earned two bonus points by setting fast time during qualifications among the 45 entries with a lap around the ˝-mile clay oval in 21.074 seconds. McDowell then won the first heat race to earn the pole position for Saturday night’s main event. Wallace will start directly behind McDowell in Saturday night’s big show. Wallace drove his Monday Trucking GRT/Monte Carlo to victory in the third heat race, and will start the OctoberFast 100 from the inside of the second row. Birkhofer won the second heat race in his GRT/Grand Prix, and will start along side McDowell in the front row for Saturday night’s race. Eckert will start Saturday night’s main event from the outside of row two after driving his Raye Vest Rocket/Grand Prix to victory in the fourth heat race. HAT championship contenders Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY, and Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN also made the OctoberFast 100 “Sweet 16” on Friday night. The four heat races transferred the top four finishers in each race into Saturday night’s big show. Bloomquist is third in the HAT points chase, just 93 points behind point leader Wallace. The defending and three-time HAT Champion finished third in the first heat race, and will start the main event from the inside of the fifth row driving his Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Mustang. Francis is fourth in the title chase, 115 points behind Wallace. Francis finished second in the second heat race, and will start his Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo from the inside of row three on Saturday night. Smith is fifth in points, 172 points behind Wallace, but still has a mathematical chance to win his second HAT championship to go with his 1996 HAT title. Smith drove his Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo to a third-place finish in the third heat race, and will start Saturday night’s main event from the inside of row six. Starting positions 17 through 22 will be determined through two 12-lap Consolation Races on Saturday night. The top three finishers in the Pace American Trailers 1st Consolation Race and Polaris ATVs 2nd Consolation Race will transfer to the OctoberFast 100. Starting spots 23 and 24 are HAT Provisionals. Those starting positions will go to the two highest eligible drivers in the point standings that did not make the field through the heat or consolation races. The HAT drivers will greet the race fans at Muskogee Speedway on Saturday afternoon with an autograph session on souvenir row at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with racing at 7:30 p.m. The race day information line is (918) 686-7223.
