AUKLAND MAKES THE RIGHT CALL FOR JACKSON VICTORY

JACKSON, MS - Rick Aukland of Fargo, ND withstood an early race challenge
and then went on to post his second United Dirt Track Racing Association
Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series victory of the season Saturday night in the
100-lap main event at Jackson Motor Speedway.

The victory was worth $15,000 to Aukland driving the 10-10-220
Mastersbilt/Grand Prix.  After starting on the pole position, Aukland
battled early with outside front row starter Eddie Rickman of Columbus, MS
before taking the lead for good on lap 11.

Rickman held on for the second spot, with third going to Kenny Merchant of
Ruston, LA in the J.D. Caver Warrior/Mustang.  Bill Frye made a spectacular
run from the 22nd starting spot to bring his UniFirst Uniforms Warrior/Grand
Prix home in the fourth spot.

The 1996 Hav-A-Tampa Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN padded his Hard Charger point lead with a fifth place finish after starting his
Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo from the 21st staring spot.

The defending and three-time HAT Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN finished sixth in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Mustang, and seventh went to Donnie Barnhart of North Little Rock, AR in the B&M Excavating GRT/Monte Carlo.  Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR finished eighth in the Monday Trucking GRT/Monte Carlo after starting 23rd.

Steve Francis of Ashland, KY took the ninth spot in the Action Auto Mart
Rocket/Monte Carlo, and HAT point leader Dale McDowell of Rossville rounded out the top ten in the Dover Cylinder Heads GRT/Monte Carlo.  McDowell still leads the HAT points chase, but Wallace moved to within ten points.Bloomquist also moved around Francis for third in the HAT point standings.

Off and on rain showers throughout the evening caused a late start to the
program, and a two-hour delay between consolation races.  But Mother Nature gave the Hav-A-Tampa teams a whole new race track from what they saw the previous night.

Dry track conditions on Friday night made slow going for the early
qualifiers, and late qualifiers made good use of the ¼-mile clay oval once
enough rubber was laid down on the surface.  These conditions saw five of
the top ten Hav-A-Tampa point drivers running one of the two consy races.

The wet race track on Saturday left teams guessing what tire compound
combinations to run in the main event.  Soon after the green flag fell to
start the race, it was apparent who made the right choices.

"We were making air pressure adjustments right up until the very last
second, and we were one of the last cars out here to line up for the
feature," Aukland said.  "This was the first time I had ever been here, so I
'm glad the GVS guys were here because they won this race last year.  It was
up to them to make the right decisions."

While Aukland and his GVS Racing crew waited until the last possible moment
to make their tire choices, Rickman was a little more laid back in his
approach to the race.

"With the rain we had earlier today, we pretty much had our mind made up
what we were going to run," Rickman said.  "The rain later in the evening
didn't change that because we didn't want to get into trouble by second
guessing ourselves, so we stuck with what we had planned to do."

Rickman took the early lead from Aukland to lead the first six laps as
Aukland kept working the inside groove until he nosed ahead to lead the
seventh lap.  Rickman took his CFC Transportation GRT/Grand Prix to the
cushion to regain the lead on lap eight, but once Aukland took command of
the point for the second time, he never looked back.

Behind the leader, there were some spectacular moves going on.  Bloomquist rode in the third spot behind Rickman, followed by Barnhart, Merchant,Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, IL, Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS,McDowell, Randy Walters of Laurel, MS, and Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN.

Erb, the HAT Rookie of the Year point leader, comes to each HAT race as a
"one man band."  He is the driver, the crew chief, the transporter driver,
and what ever else needs to be done.  If he has a radio in the car he talks
to himself.  Even without major sponsorship and a pit crew, Erb put on an
impressive performance.

By the eighth lap of the race, Erb moved by Merchant and Barnhart up to
fourth, and then put the heat on Bloomquist for the third spot.  While Erb
challenged Bloomquist, Frye was carving himself out a groove on the outside
cushion, and passed cars in wholesale fashion.  This all came about after
Frye was involved in a lap five spin.

Frye was collected in a spin by Robbie Starnes of Starkeville, MS in turn
two.  After UDTRA officials straightened out some sheet metal on Frye's car,
he was back on his mission.

By lap 15, Frye was seventh.  By lap 35, Frye was fifth, and closing on the
Bloomquist and Erb duel for the third spot.  Erb, running the inside groove,
passed Bloomquist for third on lap 46, and by the halfway point, Frye was by
Bloomquist and into the fourth position.

Three laps later, Frye passed Erb for third, and has his sights set on
Rickman for second.  Meanwhile, Aukland was out of sight, as he had opened
up over a full straightaway lead.  The caution flag Frye needed came out on
lap 57 for debris in turn two.

On the restart, Frye's pace seemed to slow from what he had previously run
before the caution, as Erb passed him for third on lap 64.  Once Frye
brought his tires back up to temperature, he passed Erb for third on lap 66.
Erb's impressive run came to an end on lap 75, when he slowed on the front
straightaway with broken rear end gears.

The race went green the rest of the way, and by lap 90, Aukland had once
again pulled out to a full straightaway lead while Frye moved up to battle
Rickman for second.  Merchant came on strong during the last five laps of
the race to pass Frye for third.  Smith came from tenth on the lap 75
restart to post a top five finish.

The HAT series will now prepare for a three-day swing through Northwestern
Kentucky.  Paducah International Raceway will host a 75-lap $10,000-to-win
show this Thursday night, with Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City presenting a Friday and Saturday night show with a $15,000-to-win 100-lap main event.

ELITE 18 SET FOR JACKSON MOTOR SPEEDWAY 100

JACKSON, MS - The first 18 starting spots for Saturday night's United Dirt
Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series $15,000-to-win
100-lap main event at Jackson Motor Speedway were set Friday night through
six 10-lap Borla Muffler Heat Races.

Rick Aukland of Fargo, ND out-qualified the 52 entries with a time around
the ¼-mile clay oval in 16.128 seconds, and then drove his 10-10-220
Mastersbilt/Grand Prix to victory in the first heat to earn the pole
position.  Eddie Rickman of Columbus, MS will start his CFC Transportation
GRT/Grand Prix along side Aukland on the front row after winning the second
heat race.

Third heat race winner Donnie Barnhart of North Little Rock, AR starts on
the inside of the second row in his B&M Excavating GRT/Monte Carlo, with
fourth heat race winner defending and three-time Hav-A-Tampa Champion Scott
Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN starting his Miller Brothers Coal
Warrior/Mustang on the outside of row two.

The winners of the fifth and sixth heat race make up the third row.  Kenny
Merchant of Ruston, LA starts his J.D. Caver Warrior/Mustang on the inside
of row three, with Randy Walters of Laurel, MS on the outside in his
GRT/Monte Carlo.

Luck of the draw was the telling tale for many of the Hav-A-Tampa regulars.
The track took rubber and locked down about midway through time trials.
Drivers drawing early started in the back of the heat races, while drivers
drawing late qualifying numbers turned faster times and started in the front
of the heat races.

Since only the top three finishers in each of the six heat races transferred
to Saturday night's main event, only half of the Hav-A-Tampa top ten drivers
in points made the big show.

Bloomquist was the only top ten Hav-A-Tampa point driver to start in the top
six.  HAT point leader Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA is the next highest
starting top ten driver, and he will start his Dover Cylinder Heads
GRT/Monte Carlo from the tenth starting spot.

Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN, who is eighth in HAT points, starts his Curtis
Equipment GRT/Monte Carlo from the 12th spot.  Rick Eckert of York, PA, who
is seventh in HAT points, starts 13th in the Raye Vest Rocket/Grand Prix,
and Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI, who is sixth in HAT points will start
17th in the Performance Roofing Systems Rayburn/Monte Carlo.

Five other HAT top ten point drivers will try to make the big show on
Saturday night through one of two consolation races, where the top two
finishers in each event will transfer to the main event.  With only four
starting spots available through the consolation races, the two HAT
Provisional starting spots could be at a premium.

The two HAT Provisional spots are starting positions 23 and 24 that can be
taken by the two highest drivers in the HAT point standings that have not
made the show through heat races or consolation races.  Each driver is
allowed five provisional starts during the season.

Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR, who is second in the HAT points chase,
starts his Monday Trucking GRT/Monte Carlo third in the Pace American
Trailers 1st Consy.  Wallace trails McDowell by just 18 points.  The third
place driver in HAT points, Steve Francis of Ashland, KY will start his
Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo second in the Polaris ATVs 2nd Consy.

The 1996 HAT Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN is fifth in HAT points,
and starts his Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo from the
sixth starting spot in the 1st consy.  The ninth-place driver in HAT points,
Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC starts his Youngblood Concrete GRT/Mustang from
the eighth spot in the 1st consy.

Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR, who won the HAT event last weekend in Rome, GA,
is tenth in the HAT points chase, and will start his UniFirst Uniforms
Warrior/Grand Prix from the third starting spot in the 2nd consy.

Directions to Jackson Motor Speedway are I-55 south of Jackson, MS to Exit
85, then ¾-mile east on Siwel Road to Old Byran Road, then north .4 miles.
The race day information line is (601) 373-0076.
