Lernerville Speedway
Sarver, PA July 30, 1999
The “heat” was on at Don Martin’s Lernerville
Speedway, Friday evening; Ben Miley of Venetia captured the “sizzling
hot” Late Model Summer Classic that had a “twist” of fate.
Marking a six in the Agip Motor Oil Sprint column was Jimmy Hawley of West
Middlesex and Lou Blaney in the Ferrante Oldsmobile Modifieds. Bobby
Whitling of Seneca was the Dingbats Restaurant Pure stock victor and Dave
Crowley of New Castle survived the 46-car field in the “smash ‘em crash
‘em Demo Derby. It was Purvis Brothers/Turbo Blue Night.
The “blue panther” of Ben Miley tamed the competition
and claimed $3,000 top prize in the 30 lap Friedman’s Supermarkets/Bi-Lo Foods
Late Model Summer Classic. In the beginning of the race Miley’s Colussy
Chevrolet/Old Allegheny Shops #99 sat in the fifth spot as the caution
flag waved for Lynn Geisler who slowed on the front straight with a flat tire,
went to the pits and returned on the same lap. Miley had dropped to
seventh. Bobby Bertges guided the 24-car field for three circuits with Scott
Peltz and Nick Jones trailing. There was a caution event charged to the flagman.
On the restart newcomer Scott Peltz passed Bertges for the lead on lap four and
Dave Norton had passed Jones for third. Miley had dropped to eleventh. Three
other caution events occurred on lap 10, 12 and 13. But each time Peltz
would pull ahead of the field. On lap 13, Nick Jones moved into second, Bertges
rode in third and was hounded by Norton. Miley started his ascent claiming
ninth. By lap 15 Miley was in seventh and two circuits later in sixth. Leader
Peltz was looking strong as Jones was shadowing him on lap 22 and Miley now had
shifted into fifth. A strange set of circumstances shocked the fans as the
leaders collided on the front straight. Peltz was not able to complete the race
and Jones tagged the rear of the field. The third place car of Norton found
himself in the lead with Miley beating out Bertges for second on the restart.
Sam Stile rolled his Late Model on the front straight bringing out the red flag.
He was uninjured. With two laps to go, Miley took command, keeping it to the
checker. He announced in victory lane that this was a team effort. It was also a
birthday present to his sister Ty. On the last lap, Bertges passed point leader
Norton for the runner-up slot. Geisler came from the rear of the field to place
fourth with Davey Johnson rounding out the top five. Six through ten went
to Gary Lyle, John Britsky, Bob Wearing Sr, Jeff Henry, and Mark Whitehill.
Bill Knepper, Mike Johnson and Norton won the prelims. Bob Puz nabbed the
B-Main.
For the sixth time this season, Hawley did it “his
way,” garnering the 20 lap Agip Motor Oil Sprint main. Hawley’s Doc Crawford
owned #CIII came from fourth to displace leader Leonard Ripper on lap seven and
“checked out!” A half a straightaway behind, Jamie Smith was scored
second with Brent Matus, third, Scott Priester fourth and Leonard Ripper fifth.
Ralph Spithaler was sixth and was trailed by Ralph Engel, Robert Altmeyer,
Charlie Holben, and Rich Kerstetter. Tommy Marshall and Hawley won the heat
races. Hawley is 23 points in front of Spithaler.
Lou Blaney continues his “amazing pace,” winning his
sixth Ferrante Oldsmobile Modified feature event elevating his all time win
record to 67. Leading the field, George Hobaugh did a super job of driving for
nine laps, while Lou Blaney darted from twelfth to second by lap three. Coming
up on lap ten, Hobaugh’s car slowed on the front stretch and a large pile up
ensued. On the restart using the low line Blaney took control and was not to be
denied. Runner-up Brian Swartzlander was using the cushion but finished several
cars lengths behind him. Mike Sutton was third and was followed by Josh
Skarzenzki, Jim Weller, Steve Solari, Jim Faas, Bobby Hoffman, Dave Murdick and
Jeff Schaffer. Blaney and Skarzenski scored in the heat races. Weller
remains fifteen digits ahead of Blaney in the point race. The late modified
driver, Russ Woolsey’s family presented a commemorative trophy to Blaney in
honor of Woolsley.
Leading coast to coast, Bobby Whitling “whittled”
away the competition in the 15 lap Dingbat’s Restaurant Pure Stock top event
to garner his first win of the season. With three laps to go Matt Lux passed
Jeff Walters for the second spot. Dan Pfleuger was fourth and was trailed by
Harold Reges, Bruce Milbert, Chris Schneider, Dave Ferringer, Scott Bochek, and
Butch Lambert. Reges, Walters and Lux captured the preliminary races. Although
Joe Kelly dropped out on lap seven with mechanical problems, he leads the point
chase with Bochek by 39 points.
