Talladega Short Track News Release Talladega, AL October 11, 1999 SAS Doubleheader on Tap at TST on Winston 500 Weekend Talladega, AL -The Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series will be at Talladega Short Track this Friday and Saturday night for the traditional Winston 500 related festivities at the 3/10's mile banked clay oval. The feature attraction will be Winston Cup Rookie Sensation, Tony Stewart. The young driver of the Home Depot sponsored Winston Cup car will be participating in the Southern All Star races each night. Stewart currently resides in 4th place in the Winston Cup standings and is running away with the 1999 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year Title chase. Action will get kicked off for the PEPSI X-TREME WEEKEND on Friday night with the final race of the season for the SAS Late Model Bandit Series as it will be the season finale' for the convertible series with the points championship on the line. Current points leader John Llewellyn will have to fend off a fast closing David Gentry who is only 28 points behind Knoxville, TN's John Lllewellyn. The Bandits will be featured in a 40 lap main event. A stellar field is expected, as last year's October event drew 51 SAS Bandit competitors to TST. Then on Saturday night, the Southern All Star Super Late Model Series rumbles into town for a 50 lap main event. The south's top Late Model pilots are expected to be on hand as the SAS Super Late Model tour championship races culminates. Currently, Ringgold, GA's Jamie Perry holds a slim ten-point lead over North Carolina's Jeff Smith. Virtually all drivers in the top ten in SAS points are expected to be on hand including Mike Head, Stan Amacher, Tim Roszell, Randle Chupp, Rex Richey, Carnell Parker, Mark Mears, and Rookie sensation Duayne Hommel. A full host of top local talent including Danny Peoples, TST Track Champion Greg Skinner, along with Stacy Holmes, Bo Shirley, Jerry Goodwin, Ted Lackey, Ross Martin, Randy Peoples, Red Farmer and many more are expected to be on hand vying for a starting spot in the 24 car field along with Winston Cup phenom Tony Stewart. The SAS Super Late Model event last year drew a whopping 60 entries for the Winston 500 weekend Super Late Model event. Also on tap for the local divisions will be a $1,200 to win event for the IMCA Modifieds with the defending event Champion being Adam Larson from Ames, IA. A $1,000 to win event for the IMCA Stock Cars with Flyin' Bryan Nevins from South Des Moines, IA being the defending event champion. Both IMCA division events will be unsanctioned as the IMCA points season has concluded. The always thrilling Late Model Sportsman division will have $500 to win feature events each night along with the Pony Stocks paying $300 to win each night. The wild Cruisers will be in action each night also. Gates are scheduled to open at 4pm each day with racing underway at 8pm.
