DUNCAN, CLINE, MAFFETT, & ADKINS COLLECT LAKEVILLE DIRT BLOWOUT WINS

By M.D. Swanger
Lakeville, Ohio Saturday, October 2, 1999

Lakeville Speedway closed out the 1999 racing season with their annual Ohio Dirt Blowout sponsored by Ray's Garage under beautiful conditions and a jam packed pit area. The exotic looking outlaw late models were the highlight of the week-end with the big plexiglass sideboards, sprintcar wings and other speed-enhancising contraptions hooked on to all the cars. Charlie Duncan of Wooster set sail from his outside front row starting position and blew away the field as in just 10 laps, he had a 1/2 lap lead but with slower traffic and a couple caution flags thrown in, different drivers had chances to close the gap at times. Ryan Markham was one of those drivers but he suffered a flat tire on lap 19 to knock him out of contention and then Dave Wirt ran second but mechanical problems just past halfway of the 40 lapper, put him out. Mark Uhler's engine began to lose power as he was giving chase as he was running second. With others having early problems, and with Duncan's CRM, Courtesy AutoWorld, and JCS Enterprises #17 acting like a rocket ship, the 1999 track champion cruised on to his fifth win of the year. J.R. Gentry finished with a solid runner-up finish as Bob Eicholtz, Aaron Middaugh and Matt Aber filled in the top five. Heat wins went to Uhler and Eicholtz.
The Steel Block late model 40 lap feature was all Wayne Maffett's for the first 36 laps as he too built up a big lead and though fighting through lap traffic allowed Corey Conley and D.J. Cline to close in, Maffett was able to pull away in open track conditions. With 6 laps to go, Maffett's oil pump started acting up and then the caution flag flew 2 laps later for Gary Hensel Sr. On the restart, Maffett couldn't get up to speed and that allowed both Conley and Cline to motor by and when Conley slipped high in turn two, Cline powered by and the St. Clairsville driver and his Stan Hover, Cline Sweeper Service, and Twarog's #9 pulled into the Budweiser victory lane. Conley and Maffett held on to second and third as Norm Aronhalt and Harold Snell Jr. filled out the top five. Cline and Conley also mastered the heat races.
Maffet Jr. had better luck in the Street Stock main as the Mansfield driver and his Hall's Auto Sales and Hall's Racing Central #240 set the pace for the last 39 laps to capture his 7th win at Lakeville. Mike Lonas and first lap leader Darren Blackford battled bumper to bumper and fender to fender the last half of the feature with Lonas able to grab second place as the pair came out of turn 4 on the last lap. Jason Flory and Andy Coblentz rounded out the top five. Claiming the heat wins were Lonas and Bruce Miller.
The race with the most lead changes was the Pure Stock feature as Paul Brown was the leader of the pack for the opening 5 circuits before Rory Reed grabbed control. His stay at the top also lasted just 5 trips around as Joe Ryan Jr. muscled by and he would lead from lap 11 until a flat tire put him in the pits on lap 26. At that point, Sugar Creeks Jerry Adkins took over and his #101 battled off charges by Scott Clantz, Roger Drouhard, Reed, and Ty Myers to post the win as that foursome finished in that order. Chalking up heat wins were Drouhard, Clantz, and Adkins as Todd Swim toped the last chance race.
The V-8 Cruisers ran a 75 lap feature on Friday night and Craig Fry was out front for the opening 10 laps but Massillon's Duffy Smith and the Hensel Asphalting #68 motored by and breezed to the win to celebrate his 44th birthday a day early. Bob Fry passed Craig for second as Mike Finger took 4th ahead of Fred Snyder. In regular action on Saturday night, Bob Fry, of Wooster, was the class of the field as the Pitt Stop Exhaust #47 bested Finger, Mike Rowe Sr., Smith and Fred Snyder.
Last Friday before the fog blanketed the track, Wooster's Ronnie Miller outran the 4-Cylinder field for the win in the 40 lap event. The Tom's Salvage #22 was followed by Fred Snyder, Dan Hensel, Jeff Norris, and Sam Huffman. Saturday night's regular feature saw Dundee's Fred Snyder park his #7 in victory lane as he took the lead at the halfway point and then held off runs by Terry Adkins, Jimmy Cushing Jr., Sam Huffman, and Brian Dawson.
