June 22, 1999 AUKLAND MAKES LAST LAP PASS FOR DAVENPORT WIN
DAVENPORT, IA – Rick Aukland of Fargo, ND led only one lap Tuesday night during the 50-lap United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series main event at Davenport Fairgrounds Speedway, but it was the last one, and it was worth $10,000. Aukland, driving the 10-10-220 Rocket/Monte Carlo, made a last lap pass for the lead over Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN for the win. Bloomquist led the first 49 laps, but the defending and three-time Hav-A-Tampa Champion had to settle for second. With five laps to go in the race, Aukland was running in the third spot behind Bloomquist and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY. Aukland passed Francis for second on lap 46, and then began his charge to the front, bringing the standing-room-only crowd to their feet for the last lap shootout. When the white flag fell, Aukland looked to Bloomquist’s inside. But the leader took his Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Mustang to the bottom groove for the first time in the race. Aukland was able to get another run on Bloomquist on the inside running down the backstretch, and this time got to the third turn first, moved under Bloomquist for the lead to the checkered flag. Francis hung on to third spot in his Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo, with fourth going to Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI in the Pro Power Racing Engines Rayburn/Monte Carlo. Wendell Wallace rounded out the top five in the Monday Trucking GRT/Monte Carlo. Sixth through tenth spots respectively went to Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC, Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA after starting 19th, Gary Webb of Bluegrass, IA, Bart Hartman of Zanesville, OH, and Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH. Bloomquist took the lead at the drop of the green flag followed by Aukland, Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR, Schlieper, and Francis. The second lap saw Moyer pass Aukland for second spot, and Francis pass Schlieper for fourth. A three-car crash in turn one on lap seven brought out the red flag, as Kenny Merchant of Ruston, LA, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, and Denny Eckrich of Coralville, IA tangled, with Merchant flipping his J.D. Caver Warrior/Mustang on its roof. Merchant climbed from his destroyed car O.K., while Pearson and Eckrich were able to restart. On the restart, Schlieper slipped back to the eighth spot, but returned to the top five by the halfway point in the race. On lap 28, Francis passed Aukland for third, and he began to chase down the second place car of Moyer. Moyer’s night came to an abrupt end on lap 34 when he hit the second turn wall. That set up the 17 lap dash to the finish with Bloomquist leading Francis, Aukland, Schlieper and Wallace. Bloomquist ran the high line all night, while Francis used the bottom groove. Aukland also took the short way around the ½-mile clay oval on the bottom to reel in Francis, and then make his winning move on Bloomquist. Webb took fast time honors over the 47 entrants with a lap of 21.319. Borla Muffler 10-lap Heat Race victories were taken by Aukland, Bloomquist, Schlieper, and Moyer. The Pace American Trailers 10-lap Consolation Race was won by Merchant, and the Polaris ATVs 10-lap Consolation Race was won by Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN. The next event on the 1999 $3-Million 10th Anniversary Hav-A-Tampa Schedule is The Masters, a 100-lap $51,000-to-win event at Cedar Lake Speedway in Somerset, WI this Friday and Saturday night.
