Mid-Atlantic Championship Series - MACS
September 4, 1999
By: Jeff Geesey
Andrews awesome in MACS hat-trick
The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series made its inaugural appearance at Dennis and Peggy Shutt's, McKean
County Raceway, East Smethport, PA, on Saturday, September 4. The standing room only crowd gathered for
the "Hubber 50" which drew 37 drivers from four states for the $5,000 to-win program. Unfortunately, not all
fans that made the trek to the fairgrounds got to see the race because there simply was no room to
accommodate them.
Ten-year veteran, Todd Andrews, Eldred, PA, claimed his fourth win of the season and third in a row marking
his career eleventh with the Series. Andrews pilots a FORD Probe, GRT Chassis, clad with Hoosiers, and
powered by a Malcuit 415 FORD. Todd's supporters are Hamill Enterprises; Chase to the Checkers; Andrews
Auto Salvage; Phase II Decals and Dirt Late Model Magazine.
The field was narrowed to the top 24 drivers through four heats and two B Mains. Luck of the draw placed
local standout and past track champion, Jeff Hoffman and Rob Blair, currently second in MACS points and
1999 Raceway 7 track champion, in the front row. Eventual winner, Todd Andrews, was positioned in
sixteenth.
As the green waved, Hoffman vaulted into the early lead for the opening three laps. The field demonstrated an
outstanding driving display. Hoffman lead the field to the first of five cautions. The following four
challengers included Blair, Dutch Davies, Rick Isadore, and Kenny Trevitz.
Once the field regrouped, Hoffman again led the way steaming around the smooth, fast oval. He set a
blistering pace until the second caution flew on lap 6. Hoffman's contenders at this juncture were Blair,
Isadore, Dick Barton and Bob Close.
The field exhibited amazing talent for the boisterous crowd. Lapped traffic was engaged by the top runners on
the nineteenth circuit.
The quintet was in tight fight formation as they swarmed around the lapped cars in a very intense dog-fight for
the lead. Lap 26 saw a significant turn of events as the third running Close looped his mount in turn three
bringing out the third caution. Close, a fan favorite from the area, had many disappointed on lookers. The new
top five were Hoffman, Blair, Isadore, Barton and Andrews.
Ed Carley and Travis Asel brought out the fourth caution as they tangled in turn four. Hoffman remained in the
lead over Blair, Isadore, Andrews and Barton. The final twenty laps were fabulous as the drivers intensified
their dicing to an incredible level fighting for their positions.
Lap 40, Andrews made his move launching into second and in pursuit of the leader. The final caution flew on
lap 44 closing the field for a six-lap dash to the checkers. On the restart, Andrews squared-up on the bumper of
Hoffman as the field roared to life at the cone on the front chute. The fans were whipped into a fevered frenzy
with anticipation of a great finish. The throng of fans were on their feet screaming as they cheered their
favorites drivers.
Hoffman held the top spot until lap 46 when he reluctantly relinquished the lead to Andrews. Both drivers
were racing each other extremely hard and clean. Andrews was able to stave off all challenges of Hoffman
during the final three revolutions that was chalked full of excitement. Barton, after a dazzling performance, settled for third over Isadore, followed by Dutch Davies. Bob Close, recovered to finish sixth after his early
disaster. He was followed by Kenny Trevitz, Rob Blair, Al Brewer, and Ron Davies driving his brother-in-law,
Miles Stitzenger's car while Miles recovers from a broken wrist.
MACS Junior Racer Club (JRC) winner of the night was seven-year old Lacey Martin, Crosby, PA. She
received t-shirts and hats from Hoosier and McCreary Tire, as well as a hat from Slavic Custom Racing Shirts
and Decals. The Series provided the winner with a MACS checkered flag.
Calico Coatings gift certificate winners: Todd Andrews $125.00; Todd Andrews (Hard Charger) $75.00; Dave
Lundgren $50.00 and Jeff Ferguson $50.00
The next MACS stop is Friday and Saturday September 24 and 25, at Doug and Linda Timmon's Winchester
Speedway, Winchester, VA for the 36th Annual Winchester 200. The MACS portion of the show includes
Friday night time trials and heat events with Saturdays' show containing the B Mains and the 100 lap Late
Model A Main. This program pays $10,000 to win from the $43,000 total purse. Twelfth pays $1,000 and
$600 to start.
