MACSMid-Atlantic Championship Series - MACSIndiana, PA August 27, 1999 By: Jeff Geesey For Immediate Release: The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series was graciously received for their forth and final appearance at Ron and Thelma Nielson's Raceway 7, Conneaut, Ohio, Friday, August 27. Thirty-seven drivers assembled for the 50-lap, $5,000 to-win program. Also on tap was the Bossard/Crawford GMC "Super 7 Shootout" for the top eight money winners in the four MACS events presented at the track this season. Ten-year veteran, Todd Andrews, Eldred, PA, made it two-in-a-row with his third visit to victory lane in MACS events this season. This marks his tenth career MACS win affording him sole possession of career wins leader surpassing Gary Stuhler. Andrews chauffeurs a FORD Probe, GRT Chassis, skinned with Hoosier's, and powered by a Malcuit 415 FORD. Todd's boosters are Hamill Enterprises; Chase to the Checkers; Andrews Auto Salvage; Phase II Decals and Dirt Late Model Magazine. The field was reduced to the top 24 drivers through four heats and two B Mains. Luck of the draw placed Tony Lombardi, in his best Series performance to date, and Todd Andrews in the front row. Andrews blasted into the early lead, for the opening stanza before the first of four cautions flew for a multi-car incident involving Merle Terry, Robbie Blair, and Mickey Wright. Once the field regrouped, Andrews led the way over Lombardi, Bob Close, Scott Rhodes, and David Scott. Andrews looked dominant as he blazed away from the field. The leader's pace was so rapid that by lap 13, he was already engaging lapped traffic. Just as Andrews waded into traffic, Close dispatched Lombardi and set his sights on the leader. The seventeenth circuit found Close reeling in Andrews. There was no lapped traffic to handle, so the pair hooked up in a fierce duel for the lead. They were hurling around the oval at an amazing speed with Andrews attempting to put real estate between himself and the hard-charging Close. The second caution flew on lap 19 temporarily slowing the frenzied pace. The top five included Andrews, a lapped car, Close, Lombardi, Scott, and Dick Barton. It took Close six more revolutions to dispose of lapped traffic and set sail on the leader. Andrews had built a comfortable margin during that time cruising right along. Close would have none of that and steadily reeled in the leader. By lap 34, Close caught Andrews. Todd had his work cut out for him once again, but the persistent Close wouldn't give up. Bob dogged Andrews for the next four revolutions, pulling beside him twice, only to be thwarted. On lap 38, Close was seriously running for the lead, while Andrews contended with lapped traffic. Entering the mouth of turn three, the two lead cars touched slightly, the lapped car of Dale Applebee. Applebee spun and collected Close. Bob dejectedly retired to the pits. Dale Applebee continued. The new top five order was Andrews, Barton, Lombardi, Scott and Rhodes. Barton, now had a clear shot at his first career MACS victory squarely in front of him. Andrews and Barton walked away from the rest of the field grappling for the coveted win. The lead duo raced all over the surface for the final twelve circuits. As the laps clicked off, Barton slipped ever so slightly losing precious inches on the leader. At the checkers, it was Andrews over a very close runner-up Barton, Scott, Rhodes, and Lombardi. The next tier of five included Rob Blair, the event hard charger from twenty-third; Lynn Geisler; Ed Carley, from seventeenth; David Lyon; and Rusty Whitmore. MACS Junior Racer Club (JRC) winner of the night was seven-year old Jeff Ganyard, Ashtabula, OH. He received t-shirts and hats from Hoosier and McCreary Tire, as well as a hat from Slavic Custom Racing Shirts and Decals. The Series provided the winner with a MACS checkered flag. Calico Coatings gift certificate winners: Todd Andrews $125.00; Rob Blair (Hard Charger) $75.00; John Venable $50.00 and Dave Padula $50.00 Bossard/Crawford GMC "Super 7 Shootout" was the final Series performance of the season at Raceway 7. The top eight drivers in earnings, in the four MACS shows, alphabetically were: Todd Andrews, Dale Applebee, Dick Barton, Bob Close, Ron Davies, Lynn Geisler, Scott Rhodes, and Matt Urban. These drivers redrew for starting positions; Barton and Close sat in the front row. The 8-lap dash, paying $1,000 to-win caused the drivers to be pensive as two cautions flew just getting the first lap completed. After they settled down, Barton grabbed the lead and cruised to victory. Total purse for the "Shootout" was nearly $2,500 and was divided among all participants. The next two MACS stops include Saturday, September 4, the Series' inaugural visit to Dennis and Peggy Shutt's McKean County Raceway, E. Smethport, PA, for the "Hubber 50" paying $5,000 to-win. The 50-lap program sports a $21,000 total purse. Sunday, September 5, the Series moves to Bedford Speedway, Bedford PA, for the 11th Annual Bedford 55 paying $5,055 to-win from a $23,000 purse. This program provides fifth place with $1,000 while $600 goes to tenth and $300 to start. MACS Facts: Series stats reveal 244 drivers participating in sixteen events. Top Ten MACS Driver Points 1.
