Frye’s second Hav-A-Tampa win of the season in the UniFirst Uniforms Warrior/Grand Prix was worth $10,000. “I knew when the track locked down the only way I could get by Wendell was for him to get caught in lapped traffic,” Frye said. “When we got into traffic there at the end, I was able to get under him coming off turn two,and then I got by him coming off four for the white flag.” Wallace held on for second spot in the Monday Trucking GRT/Grand Prix and increased his point lead over Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA for the 1999 HAT Championship to 75 points. After leading for 69 laps of the race,Wallace was not interested in points, or his HAT leading 19th top five finish of the season.“I think we led every lap but the one we were suppose to,” Wallace said.“Every race this year, we haven’t been worried about points. We come these races to win, and that’s what we’re going to keep on doing for the rest of the season. The points will take care of themselves.” Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC drove a steady race to bring the Youngblood Concrete GRT/Mustang home in the third spot. Scott Bloomquist had an up and down night to rally for a fourth-place finish in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Mustang. Bloomquist had fast time honors among the 28 entries, turning in a time around the 3/8-mile clay oval in 15.194 seconds. At one point in the race, the defending and three-time HAT Champion, who started fourth, dropped back as far as tenth-place. The 1996 HAT Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN charged from his 10th starting spot to bring the Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT Monte Carlo home in fifth spot. Sixth went to Rick Eckert of York, PA in the Raye Vest Rocket/Grand Prix. McDowell finished seventh in the Glenn’s Auto Parts GRT/Monte Carlo. Terry English of Benton, KY finished eighth in the AAA Fence Rayburn/Monte Carlo. The 1993 HAT Champion Clint Smith of Griffin, GA was the Hard Charger of the night blasting his Turkey Creek Snacks Swartz/Monte Carlo from the 19th starting spot to ninth. Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN rounded out the top ten in the Curtis Equipment GRT/Monte Carlo. Wallace grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag followed by Cook, Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Frye, and Bloomquist. Pearson passed Cook for second on lap 11, and Frye moved by Cook into third on lap 20. On a lap 24 restart, Bloomquist had fallen back to tenth, and Freddy Smith had charged into fifth. By lap 27, Bloomquist had moved back up to sixth. After another restart on lap 48, Pearson began to pressure Wallace for the lead, and he put his M&M Transport Warrior/Monte Carlo on the point on lap 54. Pearson’s lead was short-lived, as he suddenly slowed on lap 58 with overheating problems and brought out the final caution flag of the race. Wallace led Frye, Cook, Bloomquist, and Freddy Smith down for the 17-lap dash to the finish. In the closing laps, Wallace caught the last car on the lead lap, Vic Hill of Knoxville, TN. Wallace looked to the outside to lap Hill, but instead opened the door of opportunity for Frye, who dove to the inside on lap 74. The three 12-lap Borla Muffler Heat Races were won by Wallace, Pearson, and Cook. The 12-lap Pace American Trailers/Polaris ATVs Consolation Race was won by Clint Smith. The HAT Series travels to Atomic Speedway in Knoxville,TN on Saturday and Sunday nights for a 100-lap $20,000-to-win main event in from of the Speedvision television cameras. Over $2,500 was collected Friday night for injured HAT driver Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI. A Rayburn Racing Jacket was raffled off, and just before the main event, the HAT drivers passed their helmets through the stands.
