HAV-A-TAMPASeptember 25, 1999 MOYER TAKES SIXTH HAT WIN OF THE SEASON AT WEST PLAINS
WEST PLAINS, MO – Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR charged from the sixth starting spot, took the lead on lap 12, and never looked back to win the United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series 5th Annual Supernationals 100 presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts Saturday night at West Plains Motor Speedway. The $15,000 victory was Moyer’s sixth of the season in 24 starts driving the Petroff Towing GRT/Grand Prix. “We had never run a GRT chassis here before, so we had to guess on the set up,” Moyer said. “The crew did a great job in setting up the car because it worked well anywhere I needed to drive it on the track.” Moyer had to use up a lot of the 3/8-mile clay oval in his run to the win. In the early laps, Moyer used the inside groove to work his way to the front. After passing Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN for the lead on lap 12, Moyer stepped out to the outside groove. When he got to lapped traffic, Moyer just went wherever he needed to. While the 1997 Hav-A-Tampa Champion sped away to the victory, the battle for second behind him was a spectacular one between Smith in the Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY in the Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo. The pair exchanged the second spot six times during the race with Smith taking the spot with a lap 98 pass on the high side, while Francis settled for third behind the 1996 HAT Champion. The defending and three-time HAT Champion Scott Bloomquist finished fourth in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Mustang, and fifth went to Rick Eckert of York, PA in the Raye Vest Rocket/Grand Prix. Sixth through tenth spots respectively went to Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN in the Curtis Equipment GRT/Monte Carlo, Donnie Barnhart of North Little Rock, AR in the B&M Excavating GRT/Monte Carlo, Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA in the Glenn’s Auto Parts GRT/Monte Carlo, Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC in the Youngblood Concrete GRT/Mustang, and Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR in the Monday Trucking GRT/Grand Prix. The finish of the race also made for some changes in the top ten of the Hav-A-Tampa point standings with three events left on the 1999 10th Anniversary $3-Million season. McDowell closed to within 85 points of championship leader Wallace, and Bloomquist moved to within 14 points of McDowell and 99 points of Wallace. Francis is fourth in the points chase, 78 points behind Bloomquist, and Smith is fifth, drawing to within 47 points of Francis. Eckert moved into the sixth spot, dropping Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR to seventh, and Arp moved up to the eighth spot ahead of Cook. The injured Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI is still tenth in the point standings, but 11th place Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL closed to within one point. The next event for the HAT Series on the three-event “Wild West Tour” will be on Tuesday night for the 66 lap $10,000-to-win 66 Showdown at Joplin, MO 66 Speedway. There will be a special Charity HAT Drivers Golf Tournament benefiting the United Way at noon on Monday at the Schifferdecker Golf Course in Joplin, MO. There will also be a HAT Team Transporter Parade through downtown Joplin and on to the race track at 5 p.m. on Monday. The track is located west of downtown Joplin on 7th Street (Old U.S. Highway 66). For ticket information call (417) 782-0660. The Official HAT Host Motel is the Ramada Inn at I-44 and Range Line Road at Exit 8. For reservations call 1-800-272-6232 and ask for the special Hav-A-Tampa Discount Rate.
