HAV-A-TAMPASeptember 17, 1999 BILLY THE KID OUT-GUNS HAT REGULARS FOR BULLS GAP POLE
BULLS GAP, TN – Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, TN will start on the pole position for Saturday night’s United Dirt Track Racing Association $15,000-to-win Loven Ready Mix 100 for the Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series at Volunteer Speedway. “Billy The Kid” earned the inside front row starting spot by driving his P&J Builders Warrior/Monte Carlo to victory in the 1st Borla Muffler 12-lap Heat Race. Ogle began the Friday night proceedings by out-gunning the 58-car field in qualifications with a lap around the 4/10-mile high-banked clay oval in 13.222 seconds. Although he started the 1st heat on the pole position, Ogle didn’t lead the race until lap four when he took the point from Rick Eckert of York, PA. The top three finishers in Friday night’s six Borla Muffler Heat Races went on to the big show. In the first heat, Eckert took the second spot, with third going to Brett Miller of Greenville, TN. Rick Aukland of Fargo, ND will start his 10-10-220 Mastersbilt/Grand Prix on the outside of the front row for Saturday night’s main event. Aukland won the second heat followed by Bob Pierce of Oakwood, IL and Vic Hill of Knoxville, TN. Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN drove his Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo to the win in the third heat. The 1996 Hav-A-Tampa Champion will start on the inside of row three on Saturday night. Second and third spots in heat three went to Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL and Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, IL. Steve Francis of Ashland, KY won the fourth heat in the Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo and will start along Smith in row two on Saturday night. Marshall Green of Dalton, GA and Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN also transferred to the big show out of heat four. Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR won an exciting side-by-side duel with Scott Sexton of Pigeon Forge, TN to win heat five. Frye will start his UniFirst Uniforms Warrior/Grand Prix on the inside of the third row for the 100 lapper. HAT point leader Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR also transferred to the main event. Rex Richey of Ringgold, GA won the sixth heat in the Cleveland Driving School Rayburn/Monte Carlo followed by the defending and three-time HAT Champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN and Dwayne Hommel of Newport, TN. Richey will start Saturday’s race from the outside of the third row. HAT championship contender Dale McDowell of Rossville, Ga failed to make the “Elite 18” on Friday night and will have to try and make the 24-car starting field through one of two Consolation Races on Saturday night. McDowell was the second fastest qualifier, but spun in turn one of the first lap of heat two. McDowell came from the back of the pack to finish fourth. The top two finishers in Saturday night’s Pace American Trailers 1st Consolation Race and the Polaris ATVs 2nd Consolation Race will fill in starting positions 19 through 22 for the main event. Starting spots 23 and 24 will be HAT Provisional starting positions. On Saturday night, there will be a HAT Drivers Autograph Session at 4:30 p.m., with hot laps scheduled for 7 p.m. The Volunteer Speedway UMP Modifieds and Sportsman cars will also be in action on Saturday night. Volunteer Speedway is located just west of I-81 at exit 23. The race day information line is (423) 235-5020.
