HAV-A-TAMPASeptember 24, 1999 SMITH AND ECKERT EARN FRONT ROW SPOTS FOR WEST PLAINS SUPERNATIONALS
WEST PLAINS, MO – Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN and Rick Eckert of York, PA are on a roll in United Dirt Track Racing Association competition on the Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series. Both drivers picked up where they left off Friday night at West Plains Motor Speedway. Six nights earlier Smith picked up his first Hav-A-Tampa win of the season at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN with Eckert finishing second. The two will start on the front row for the $15,000-to-win 5th Annual Supernationals 100 presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts on Saturday night. Smith qualified for the Isky Dash at the Hav-A-Tampa Shootout at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA on October 8 by earning fast time honors. The 1996 HAT Champion turned the 3/8-mile clay oval in 13.767 seconds in his Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo, and then won the first 12-lap Borla Muffler Heat Race to earn the pole for Saturday’s main event. The six heat races lined up the first 18 starting spots for Saturday night’ s big show. Following Smith across the stripe in the first heat race were Steve Francis of Ashland, KY and Jeff Taylor of Batesville, AR. Eckert drove his Raye Vest Rocket/Grand Prix to victory on the second heat race, and will start along side Smith in the front row for the Supernationals. Leslie Essary of Joplin, MO and Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA rounded out the top three. Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN won the third heat in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Mustang to earn the inside second row starting spot for Saturday night’s main event. Donnie Barnhart of North Little Rock, AR and Marshall Green of Dalton, GA followed the defending and three-time HAT Champion in heat three. Defending Supernationals Champion Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC won the fourth heat in his Youngblood Concrete GRT/Mustang and will start Saturday night’sbig show from the outside of row two. HAT point leader Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR and Brandon Ball of West Plains, MO took the second and third spots respectively. WPMS Show Me 100 winner Terry Phillips of Springfield, MO will start on the inside of row three Saturday night after driving his Sportsman Pick Up Covers GRT/Monte Carlo to victory in heat five. Second and third spots respectively went to Rex McCroskey of Springfield, MO and Rick Aukland of Fargo, ND. Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR won the sixth heat in the Petroff Towing GRT/Grand Prix and the 1997 HAT Champion will start on the outside of row six for Saturday night’s main event. Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN finished second, and third went to Clayton Christenberry of Knoxville, TN. Starting positions 19 through 22 will be determined through two consolation races on Saturday night. Starting spots 23 and 24 are HAT Provisional starting spots going to the top two eligible drivers in the HAT point standings that have not made the field through heat and consy races.
