PITTSBURGH'S PENNSYLVANIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY
8/21/99
(724) 853-7223/www.ppms.com
IMPERIAL, PA..After years of hard work, Nick Garin realized a dream in 1979
when he opened what is now known as Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Davey
Johnson was raised in Imperial, just a few miles from the track and began his
racing career there in 1982. Saturday night, Nick would have been proud as
Johnson swept the Nick Garin Memorial - Late Model Twin 20's.
Rick Heim of Pittsburgh registered his fourth Limited Late Model feature
win. Wayne Tessean of Austintown, OH set a personal record with his 9th M.
Stahl E-Modified victory. Washington's Neal Isiminger proved his first win
two weeks ago was no fluke by visiting victory lane for the second time in
the Schneider Trucks Spectator Stocks, and Kennedy Township's Tony Sinicrope won
for the second straight week in the Amateur Stocks.
Mark Banal used his front row starting spot to grab the lead at the
start of the first Late Model feature. While Banal set the pace, eyes were
focused on eighth starting Davey Johnson who was steadily moving towards the
front. After taking second from Mike Cecere on lap six, Johnson found
himself almost a straightaway behind Banal. Johnson had the pedal to the
metal as he quickly erased Banal's advantage. As the leaders raced through
lapped traffic at the halfway point, Johnson darted into the lead and was never
headed in taking the win. Banal, Ed Ferree, Ricky Thomas and Cecere
completed the top five. Lou Bradich was sixth, Jim Zarin seventh, Alex
Ferree eighth, Ben Miley ninth and Monarch Oil Hard Charger B.A. Malcuit tenth.
With the top six cars inverted for the second twenty lapper, it was
Cecere who took the lead at the start. Once again, Johnson was leaving
cars in his wake as he moved to second on lap three. After pressuring
Cecere on the inside for five circuits, Johnson went for the lead with a high
side pass in turns one and two. Johnson drove away for his fourth win this
season at Dirt's Monster Half Mile. Cecere was second, and Ricky Thomas
won a spirited battle for third. Banal and Bradich were fourth and fifth
respectively. Rounding out the top ten were: Ed Ferree, Monarch Oil Hard Charger
Mike Johnson, B.A. Malcuit, Doug Dodd and Jim Zarin. Dodd, D. Johnson and
Thomas were the heat race winners.
After swapping the lead through the first half of the Limited Late Model
feature, Ricky Heim drove away from Dave Wade and the rest of the field for
the convincing win. Wade was second, Todd Cerenzia third, Willie
White
fourth and John Pavlick fifth in the crashfest. Jim Stephans, Brian
Laraway,
Bob Damron, Pete Loria and Len Dobrosielski completed the top ten. Monarch
Oil Hard Charger Dave Wade and Loria won the heats.
Wayne Tessean made it look easy as he started fifth and took the lead on
lap two of the M. Stahl E-Modified feature. Last week's winner, Larry
Kugel,
charged from twelfth to second. D.J. Miller was third, Russ Matejak fourth
and Ralph Hysong Jr. fifth. Mike Ross, Scott Gunn,
Bruce Dreistadt, Jeff Broniszewski and Jim Petrelle completed the top ten.
Monarch Oil Hard Charger Kugel and Tessean won the preliminaries.
Neal Isiminger held off points leader and leading winner Al Atallah,
plus
two time winner Danny Rich for his second Schneider Truck Spectator Stock
checkered flag. Dave Greenawald was fourth and Rich Apolito fifth.
Charlie
DiLoreto was sixth, A.J. Puljak seventh, Fred Schneider eighth, Frank
Schneider Sr. ninth and Gary Smith tenth. Smith and Atallah won the heats.
Taking the Amateur Strickly Stock feature win for the second straight
week
was Kennedy Township'sTony Sinicrope over Bill Capo. Bob Siemon, Bob
Schwartzmiller and Jason Fosnaught rounded out the top five.
This Saturday, August 28th, will feature the Limited Late Models Fall
Classic 40. The Late Models, M. Stahl E-Modifieds, Schneider Truck
Spectator
Stocks and Amateur Stocks will also be competing. Gates open at 5pm with
racing at 7pm.
