Interstate 79 Speedway Results
for 8-20-99
by Dixie Phillips Phone 724-569-4821 Fax 724-569-0436
Rain began to fall just as hot laps were about to begin at
Interstate 79 Speedway on Friday night. After a 10 minute shower, the
crew ran in the track again and racing started at 9:30. With the
late
start, 6 classes of cars, and bike races for the kids, Shoneys Night at
I-79 was a long one.
Gary Dalton started in the first spot in the late model
feature and
that's where he finished. Dalton left the rest of the pack and the show
was to see who would finish second. It was Dalton's second win of the
year. Frank Wilson was the runner-up followed by a group of drivers
that raced hard for the next few spots. Nolan Dalton,
Butch McGill, and Chuck Harper rounded out the top five. Six through
ten went to Scott Miles, Gary Tonkery, Denny Chamberlain, Mike Johnson,
and Danny Hamrick. Heat wins were claimed by G. Dalton, Wilson, and
Tonkery.
Stevie Wilmoth dominated the semi late feature in the
same fashion
that Dalton did. Wilmoth finished by a wide margin over Josh Adams,
Scott Chenoweth, Roy Gibson, and Mark McGill. This was Wilmoth's second
victory also. Heats race were won by Wilmoth, Chenoweth, and Adams.
Vic Vandergrift has found victory lane 6 times this
season in the
UMP modified division. He fought a good battle with Shawn Davis
throughout the entire race. Davis couldn't make the pass he tried so
hard to do and settled for second. Mike Lewis, Louie Krushansky, and
Dave Defibaugh completed the top five. Defibaugh, Davis and Lewis won
the heats.
Jeff Kesling was the victor in the pure stock class for
the fifth
time this season. He bested Troy Frazier, Gary Yost, Ron Howard, and
Frankie Buzzo in a wild feature that saw the top three cars at that
point end up in the infield just before half way. Heat wins went to
Frazier, Chuck Bloom, and Jay Martin.
In 4 cylinder action, it was win # 12 for Mike Simpson,
who
continues to dominate this class. Jeff Pennington, Dave Summers, Sonny
Crayton, and Skip Raupach followed Simpson across the line. Simpson and
Pennington won the heats.
The dwarf cars made their final appearance at I-79 with
Eric Hay
the winner of the heat and feature. Hay was followed by John
Cogar,
Steve Mason, Lynn Knepper, and Bob Bolin.
Next Friday night will be the Shinnston Plumbing Season
Championship with drivers taking their last shot at the 1999 points
title.
The Grand National AMA Quad Championship Series will be
at I-79 on
Saturday and Sunday, August 28-29. Gates will be opening each day at 8
AM. The Pro and Pro-am heats and finals will take place at 7 PM on
Saturday. night. Over 250 riders are expected this weekend at the first
ever event.
Don't forget to plan for the racing finale at I-79
which will be a
two-day show on September 3-4. On Friday evening, the STARS late model
drivers will have an opportunity to practice while qualifying and heat
races will be held for the steel block late models, UMP modifieds, and
pure stocks. The steel blocks will be following the 'Rough Rider Rules'
while the mods and pure stocks will go by I-79 rules. Gates will
open
on Friday at 5 with time trials set for 8 o'clock. A party in the pits
will be held at the conclusion of the night's racing.
On Saturday, the STARS Dirt Track Stock Car
Racing Series will
make their only visit to the state of West Virginia in 1999. The full
night of racing will include qualifying, heats, B-mains, and the 75 lap
feature which will pay $10,000 to the winner of the Simonton Windows
Mountain State Thunder. Feature events will be held for the steel
blocks, modifieds, and pure stocks. Gates will open at 4 with time
trials set to begin at 7:30.
Interstate 79 Speedway is located at Exit 125
(Shinnston/Saltwell
Rd) just north of Clarksburg, WV. For information, contact the speedway
