HORN TAKES KARS EVENT AT HVS For Immediate Release August 21, 1999
CLEARFIELD, PA- Rick Horn of Dover, PA won his first Doorways Unlimited KARS event of the season Saturday night at Hidden Valley Speedway, in the series first ever visit. Bob Garvey of Allport won his first Sid’s Subs Small Block Modified feature of the season. Repeat winners included: Jerry Timchak of Houtzdale in the Weisgarber Auto Sales Street Stocks and Chris Farrell of Clearfield in the Keystone Computer Four Cylinders. The NAPA Pure Stock feature was postponed due to the time. Lyndon Mathis and Dan Shetler led the field of 24 KARS Sprints down for Mike Frisco’s green flag, with Mathis taking the lead and setting the pace. Mathis held of first Shetler, then Nate Snyder, Scott Ausherman, and Scott Kershner. By lap ten Rick Horn was making his presence known in the top five. The top five were jockeying for position when a two car tangle slowed the field on lap 15. With just five laps to go, Horn worked the outside groove, nearly flipping late in the race, but continued to battle for the lead. Horn moved to the outside of Mathis with two laps to go and took the lead. As the field worked into turn one, Mathis spun and collected Ausherman and Brian Allman. With just two laps to go, Horn had defending series champion Dale Hammaker in second, and had to try and hold him off for two laps. Hammaker tried every trick in the book, but could not get around the #01 as Horn went to victory lane for the first time in 1999. Hammaker was second, with Snyder third, Bob Beidleman fourth, and Kershner fifth. Lyndon Mathis, Scott Ausherman, and Dan Richcreek won the heats, while Mike Enders won the B-Main. Mike Butterworth and Marvin Williams led the field down for the green, with Butterworth leading the field into the first turn. Butterworth led early on, but on lap eight, Mike Stine worked his way to first, but he went high in the first turn, and Butterworth re-gained the lead. With just seven laps to go, Butterworth broke, on a restart, giving the lead over to Bob Garvey, who held off all of Stines efforts, and went on to his first win of 1999. The top five Garvey, Stine, George Sankey, Craig Casher, and Fred Luzier. George Sankey and Fred Luzier won the heats. Craig Lobb and Denny Schmoke led the field to the green, with Doug Tibbens being the early leader. He looked to be headed for a first career win, but a lapped car took him out on lap five, giving the lead and eventual win to Jerry Timchak. Timchak had to hold off Emory Rinehart, Jr. for his fifth win of the year. THe top five were: Timchak, Rinehart, Lobb, Sam Swauger, and Todd Mathews. The heats were won by Jerry Timchak and Todd Mathews. Chris Farrell led the four cylinder feature for the entire distance, as Vern Nixon hounded him the entire diatance.The top five were: Farrell, Nixon, Chris Luzier, Joel Porter, and J.R. Toner. Dan Smeal, Joel Porter, and Chris Luzuer won the preliminaries. HVS PIT NOTES: 104 teams filled the pits, including: 30 KARS Sprints, 16 modifides, 18 street stocks, 22 four cylinders, and 18 pure stocks.....This week there will be double pure stock features, due to the late hour approaching.....Two heavy showers drenched things early on, and prolonged the show.....Two big Late Model specials are quickly approaching, Sat. September 4th and Saturday and Subday Sept. 18 & 19.....The Hub-City National Qualifyer is our next big race for the late models.
