ROARING KNOB RACEWAY PARK
8-15-99
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By Judy Gower
(724) 329-0306
MARKLEYSBURG, PA..By being in the right place at the right time, a surprised
Bob Wearing Jr. found himself in victory lane following the Ken Nicholson
& Sons Lumber Late Model feature for the second time this season at Roaring
Knob Raceway Park. Also sharing the winner's circle with the Renfrew
driver Sunday evening were Friendsville, MD's Jack Rosenberger in the
Country Charm Pure Stocks, and Eric Hay, Bakersville - Stone House
Restaurant DWARF cars.
Jeff Thomas took the lead at the drop of the green and
proceeded to check out from his competition. Wearing was able to keep
Thomas in his sights as he remained solidly in second throughout the event; but
undisputably, Thomas had the dominant machine for this race and appeared
to be on his way to an easy win. Suddenly with five laps to go, Thomas
made one slight miscue and nearly lost control of the car. That slight
bobble was enough for Wearing to drive by Thomas for the lead. The race
remained green and Thomas quickly took up the chase, but Wearing was able to
hold him off to the checker. A disappointed Thomas was second with Rob
King nailing down the third spot.
Completing the top five were Jesse Guseman and Bill VanMeter. Thomas was
the heat race winner.
The always exciting pure stocks once again lived up to their
billing.
They had the fans cheering early on as the front six cars of Jim Bendishaw,
Scott Herring, Jim Byers, Rosenberger, Lonnie Hoffman and Wayne Jordan waged
a torrid side by side battle for several laps with the remainder of the
twenty-four car field bunched close behind. While Bendishaw remained
at the
front of the tight pack, Rosenberger manuevered his way into the
second
hole. Two laps later Rosenberger completed a pass around Bendishaw
for the
lead, while Jordan was working on third running Herring. Rosenberger
remained in front for the final two circuits to give him his first win at
Roaring Knob this year. Jordan just edged out Bendishaw for second
at the
line, and Herring was a close fourth with Byers right behind for fifth.
The
heat races were won by Rosenberger, Hoffman, Byers and Jordan.
Eric Hay was the convincing winner of the non-stop DWARF car
feature over
Lynn Knepper, Greg Shingleton, John Cogar and Jeff Davis. It was Hay's
third
visit to the winner's circle this season at Roaring Knob. The heat race
winners were Shingleton and Cogar.
This Saturday, August 21, the Pure Stocks will be in action
at Roaring
Knob Raceway Park as they present the Powerhouse Pure Stock 25 lap special.
For this Saturday event the gates will open at 4:30 with pure stock racing
set to begin at 7 PM. Sunday, August 22, will be a regular racing program,
and the "First Philson Splash for Cash" is on the card as an added
attraction. Sunday racing gets underway at 5 PM with the gates opening at
3
PM.
