LAKEVILLE
MARKHAM STORMS TO LAKEVILLE TRIPLE CROWN III VICTORY
By M.D. Swanger
Lakeville Oh. Friday, Aug. 13
Showing why he is one of the best young drivers not only in Ohio but in
the country, Ashland's Ryan Markham started 16th and in sixteen laps had taken
over the lead and captured the third crown of Lakeville Speedway's Triple Crown
series to pocket the $6,000 winners share of the purse in the rain-shortened
feature. Brandon Smith beat Kris Patterson into the first turn to take the lead
and set the pace until Markham caught him. The opening 19 circuits were caution
filled with a Blaine Aber spin on the first lap. A broken tie rod put Patterson
out of contention on lap 3 as Jackie Boggs also went pitside at that point.
Kevin Weaver, the winner of the second triple crown race, spun on lap 5 to bring
out the yellow and then on lap 11, a flat tire on Steve White's ride brought it
out again. J.R. Gentry bounced of the back stretch guardrail on lap 19 for
another caution. All the cautions helped Markham and his Met's Auto Supply, The
Sign Shop, & Linder's Sports Bar #5m as he was able to keep the tires cool
as he had moved into 5th place at the ten lap mark and on the restart of the lap
11 caution powered his way past Steve Lucas and Keith Berner for second. He and
Smith went side by side for two laps before Markham took over for good.
The light rain started on lap 22 but did not effect the track until the 30
lap mark which was to be the halfway point. At that point, the rain started
falling harder and the race was checkered at lap 35. Blaine Aber recovered from
his first lap spin to take second while Keith Berner came from his 12th starting
position to finish third. Fourth place went to Rob House as he moved up from
starting 15th. Bob Eicholtz dropped from starting place of third to round out
the top five. Johnny Moore and Steve Lucas chalked up wins in the last chance
races. The Jones Oil / Turbo Blue and New Concept Racing Products event saw
Smith, Boggs, Aber, and Jeff Esbenshade post the heat wins. Skip Watterman, the
winner of the first triple crown race , had a short night as his #13 was forced
into the retaining tires in front of the pole that got hit twice last week.
There was no contact with the pole but Watterman's car was severly bent.
Number 11 was the number to be in the support classes as Mike Finger of
Wooster led flag to flag in the Rick Moore Motors Cruiser feature and Dan Hensel
broke the stranglehold of the Adkins family in the 4-Cylinder Cruisers in his
debut in that class.
The Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'A' main was rained out as next Friday
night all the classes but the 4-Cylinder Cruisers will run double features at
Lakeville Speedway.
