1999 Super Late Model Tour

SAS Super Late Models Set For Big Labor Day Weekend Events

Graysville, AL-The Southern All Star Super Late Model Series will return to
the Green Valley Speedway in Gadsden, AL on the first night of a SAS
Tripleheader on Labor Day weekend.  Action will get kicked off at the newly revamped semi banked 3/8-mile clay oval on Friday night September 3rd. The new track owners have completely reconfigured the speedway and laid down new clay, which has resulted in outstanding side by side racing. Many of the area's top drivers are expected to compete including local stars Bo Shirley,current GVS point's leader Greg Skinner, TST ace Danny Peoples, Stacy Holmes, Cullman's Jon Miller, and past SAS Champion James Cline. As always,it will be an epic battle between the local stars and the traveling pros on the SAS tour along with the expected invasion of many of the northern Georgia and east Tennessee drivers.

The SAS tour will move to Joe Lee Johnson's Cleveland Speedway on Saturday night, September 4th, for the running of the 9th  Annual Jean Johnson Memorial.  Where the traveling stars will have another tough battle ahead as the local drivers such as David Millians, Kevin Gibson, John Jones, Paul Tims, Jeff Stansberry, Lamar Scoggins and Kent Hicks are all capable of
winning this event.
    Action then will shift west to the Duck River Speedway in Wheel, TN
where a packed pit and grand stands are always the norm for the Sunday night event and some great action .at "The Duck" on September 5th. All events will be 50 lap main events paying $3,000 to win.Local drivers that will challenge the SAS regualrs incldue Jay Brinkley,David Thompson, Jerry Owens, Moe Harrison, Jimmy Nowlin, and Doyle Scott.

The 1999 SAS point's race is as close as it has ever been this deep into the
season.  A mere 12 points separate the top three drivers. The current point
leader is Jamie Perry. The Ringgold, GA driver is leading North Carolina's
Jeff Smith by only 10 points with Georgia's Mike Head back only 12 points
from Perry. Jeff Smith also leads the BTW/Late Model America Rookie of the Year points. The personable Smith is coming off his first ever SAS win after coming from 15th starting position at Atomic Speedway on August 14th.Newport, TN's Duayne Hommel is in 4th place in the series standings followed by Tullahoma, TN's Stan Amacher. Other SAS drivers expected include Mark Mears, Jay Brinkley, John Jones, Tim Roszell, David Gentry, and Carnell Parker. All drivers are expected to compete in the three-race weekend.
