          Interstate 79

Dixie Phillips

Donnie Moran took the $10,000 first place prize back to Dresden, OH, after winning the Simonton Windows Mountain State Thunder at Interstate 79 Speedway on Saturday night. Moran started on the outside of the front row but pole sitter, Eddie Carrier, Jr. led the first seven laps. The lead went back and forth until lap 12 when Moran took it for good. The race for second place was a great one as Carrier, Mike Balzano, and Chub Frank battled lap after lap. Moran checked out on the competition after each of the 6 cautions. The final caution on lap 57 bunched the field and gave RJ Conley the chance he needed to catch Moran. The hard charger of the race had to be Conley who started twenty-fourth after taking the STARS high point-man provisional. Conley found the bottom of the track to his liking and came to take the second spot from the drivers battling behind Moran.

The track surface at I-79 produced three and four wide racing throughout the 75 lap main event. Drivers running mid-pack were also driving three wide for position. Behind Conley came Frank, Steve Lucas, Tim Hitt, Booper Bare, Balzano, Gary Stuhler, Steve Shaver, and Bob Salathe.

Jeff Burdette set fast time of the 48 cars with a time of 16.626. Winning the four heat races were Carrier, Hitt, Salathe, and Bare. Carrier won the fast dash also. The two consi races went to Davey Johnson and Mike Benedum. A scary moment in the second heat came when Aaron Scott flipped his car on the frontstretch after a 3-car tangle. Scott was uninjured.

This was the final race in the West Virginia State Championship Series at I-79 and Nolan Dalton picked up the championship in that series.

The steel block late models ran their entire show on Friday evening. Thirty-seven cars made a qualifying attempt with Nolan Dalton setting the fast time of 16.341. Heat races were won by Greg Lemley, Steve Wilmoth, Mike Hawkins, and Doug Horton. Gary Dalton won the fast dash while Shannon Webb won the consolation race.

Mike Benedum collected the $1000 winner's prize after he won the 40 lap main event. A blanket could have been thrown over the top three during the entire feature race with G. Dalton, Benedum, and N. Dalton running very close. Following Benedum to the line was N. Dalton, G. Dalton, Mark McGill, Chuck Finch, Horton, Sonny Conley, Webb, Lemley, and Jesse Guseman. Mark Banal and Wilmoth ran fourth and fifth throughout most of the race until being eliminated when they made contact with a lapped car and retired from the race.

Shawn Davis spun on the first lap of the UMP modified feature, went to the tail, and proceeded to come back to the front to take the win. Davis was followed by Dave Defibaugh, Brent Trimble, Louie Krushansky, and Jerry Teter. Vic Vandergrift bested the field in qualifying with a time of 17.782. Heat races were won by Robert Hensley and Trimble while Defibaugh won the dash.

Jeff Kesling picked up the pure stock feature as he bested the 22 car field. Following Kesling were Jim Byers, Ron Howard, Pat Frazier, and Frankie Buzzo. Heat races were won by Kesling, Frazier, and Byers.
