DURBORAW WINS LATE MODELS, MIKALOSJKI THE CORNETT MEMORIAL

HAGERSTOWN, MD - It was a long afternoon of stock car racing at the Hagerstown Speedway on Family Days for the Pangborn Corporation and the Moose Lodge of Hagerstown. But when it was all over there were six happy feature winners. In the 25-lap late model feature, Nathan Durboraw of Hagerstown led all the way for his third win of the year, Devin Friese of Mercersburg, PA led all the way to claim his first win in the 20-lap late model sportsman feature, David Mikalosjki of Hagerstown scored his first career win in the 20-lap Jimmy Cornett Memorial, the biggest race of the year for the pure stocks and Brian Miller of Hagerstown made his eighth win of the year the biggest of his career in the Ernie's Salvage 25 fall championship for the 4-cyl pure stocks. James Mongan of Clear Spring won the 50-lap Fall Championship Enduro and Larry Remsburg of McConnellsburg, PA knocked out the competition for $500 in the Tommy Thompson Championship Demo.

Six attempts were needed to get the first lap in the record books at the start of the late model feature. But once the drivers got settled down, Nathan Durboraw took off from the pole like he did in each previous starts with Frankie Plessinger and Brad Omps trying to keep pace with the leader. Durboraw pulled away to a large lead and was a full straightaway in front when the next caution was waved on the 13th lap. Durboraw picked up his pace on the restart and was never seriously challenged to pick up the win over Plessinger and Omps, Roy Deese Jr finished next after starting tenth with Booper Bare rounding out the top five. Buck Tomblin was sixth with Paul Crowl, Andy Anderson, Doug Burkholder and Jeremy Miller finishing out the top ten. Heat winners for the 36 late models were Miller, Rodney Franklin, Deese and Gary Stuhler. Gerald Davis won the consolation, but his car received heavy damage when he and DJ Myers hit the frontstretch guardrail on one of  the restarts. Rick Workman received the Timber Wolf Smokeless Tobacco Hard Charger award for finishing 11th after starting 24th.

It took the late model sportsman a couple of attempts to get the 20-lap feature underway, but once they got underway, Devin Friese quickly shot in front from the pole with Daryl Kendall right behind. Wayne Walls Jr. kept with the leaders as Mike Yeakle kept the pressure on Walls. Kendall stayed within a car length of Fries throughout the race, but was unable to get a run on the leader as Fries picked up the win. Walls lost third to Yeakle on the 13th lap, but regained after a 15th lap restart and held off Yeakle for third. Scott Palmer completed the top five. The next five spots went to John Giannone, Bob Friese, Donnie Farlling, Jim Hart and Tony Daniels. Devin Friese, Kendall and W. Walls won the heats for 27 cars,. Eddie Cornett won the consi.

All the pure stock drivers look forward to the Jimmy Cornett Memorial every year and this year was no different. David Mikalosjki started on the pole with Chris Clark on his bumper. The two drivers raced nose-to-tail with Scott Daniels and Kenny Dillon right behind. Smokey Pharo joined the battle, but slipped high in the loose dirt allowing Eugene Conley to join in the battle. A restart following a caution on lap 16 put the first three drivers almost even with Daniels moving into second. Daniels was unable to haul in the leader as Mikalosjki scored his first win over Daniels, Conley, Clark and Dillon. Heat winners for 31 pure stocks were Dave Rice Jr., Dennis Lamb and Bruce Leibowitz. Russ Moseley won the consolation.

The Ernie's Salvage Yard 25 for the 4-cyl pure stocks draws the largest field of the year, but the outside cars didn't stop the seven-time feature winner Brian Miller as he led every lap in the non-stop feature. Miller started on the outside pole and had opened a large lead by the time that Sean Dawson had worked his way into second on lap 14 after starting sixth. Dawson cut into the lead each lap, but ran out of time as Miller picked up the win over Dawson, Andy Holmes, Dean Holmes and Tommy Jerin. Jerin and Miller were the heat winners for the 21 cars.

Jim Smith came across the finish line first in the 50-lap enduro, but was disqualified after the race with an illegal carburetor turning the win over to James Mongan. Paul Rice, Kenny Thomas, Pete Gems and Steve Dillon completed the top five.

Larry Remsburg had the last car still running in the Tommy Thompson Memorial Demo Derby. The next four spots went to Herb Cassidy, Tom Slack, Nice Rosenberry and Tracy Abbott.

Next week, it will be the final point race of the season. Six feature events are scheduled for the September 19th Sunday afternoon show. The Denny Bonebrake 35-lap double point feature will determine the late model champion while the late model sportsman and pure stocks will have two features each including the summer championships from August 13th. The Ernie's Salvage Yard 4-ctyl pure stocks will also be in action. Kids will enjoy the special appearance of SPEEDO , the Speedway Clown. Race time is 1 P.M.
