Moyer Gets "Back to Basics" with another Summernationals Victory!!!

July 7, 1999

by Darin Stewart

One of Billy Moyer Jr.'s shirts has the motto "Getting back to the basics" across the bottom.  Apparently the basics include destroying the competition on the 1999 UMP Summernational tour, as the Batesville Arkansas driver came one step closer to claiming the $100,000 bonus for winning half of the races run on the series with a decisive victory here Wednesday Night.

Moyer, aboard the Petroff Towing/B Auto Parts/AFCO Racing Products/Ringers Resource/GRT, took the lead on lap 25 of the 50 lap race and never looked back.  Moyer who started 8th, worked his way to the point by slowly passing cars one by one, passed Decatur Illinois driver Shannon Babb, aboard the 10-10-220/GVS Racing/Red Line Lubricants/Rayburn on lap 18,and then stalked the early leadr Mike Mullvain.  Mullvain who lead from the start of the race, is a local driver who definitely had the crowd on his side, but to no avail.  Once Moyer closed in on the #4 Kleeco Motorsports/Carters Lettering and Design/Hammond Motorsports/GRT, it was all over but the shouting.  Once Moyer cleared Mullvain, he quickly pulled away to a straightaway lead, and ran off to yet another victory at this Central Illinois facility.  Babb took second, after surviving an early race run-in with Kevin Weaver, which caused Weaver to spin around in turn 4, followed by Rick Aukland in the all black 10-10-220 Mastersbilt,Billy Drake in the Mark Steidinger Construction/Wells Family/Creative Kitchens and Baths/Larry Shaw car, and Bob Pierce.  Rounding out the top ten were Mullvain, Steve Hillard,Robbie Starnes,Kevin Weaver, and Mark Anderson.  Only the top 10 were on the lead lap at the finish.

Notes: Eighth place Finisher, Robbie Starnes had his throttle stick on several occasions throughout the feature causing some tense moments for the Starkville MS driver.  When I asked Starnes about heading to Macon for Thursday, he sounded excited. " We have heard so much about that place, we just got to see it.  This writer wonders what he will feel for the tight 1/5 mile oval 24 hours from now. ...Third Place finisher Aukland said" We werent quite right, but we were pretty close". ...A full grandstand of fans watched the evenings events, and nice weather was Mother Natures contribution for the evening.
