Mid-Atlantic Series - MACS
Indiana, PA
October 2, 1999
By: Jeff Geesey

The Cameron's rolled out the welcome mat to the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) for the twentieth show of the season at Potomac Speedway, Budds Creek, MD, for the Southern Maryland Invitational, paying $6,000 to-win from the $32,000 total purse. Fifty-seven drivers arrived to do battle from eight states including Delaware, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Greencastle, PA, veteran, Gary Stuhler, notched his second consecutive Series laurels marking his fourth MACS win of the season. He ties with Todd Andrews, each claiming eleven Series events in the last three seasons. Stuhler drives the Dale Beitler owned MasterSbilt, powered by a 415 Leggett, shod with Hoosier tires. Gary's boosters include Duron and Reliable Painting, as well as Leggett Engine Research.

The best 24 rose to the top through six heats and two B Mains for the 50-lap feature. A redraw among the top two finishers from each heat for the top 12 starting positions set up Ray Kable and Jerry Foster in the front row. Eventual winner, Gary Stuhler, started sixth on the grid.

Jerry Foster snatched the early lead as the entire field was catapulting around a smooth the 3/8 mile high-banked oval. The first of several cautions waved on lap 4, showing Foster in command followed by Scott Rhodes, Kable, Stuhler, and D.J. Myers.

The second caution occurred two short revolutions later as Carl Billet looped his mount on the front straightaway. The top five shifted to reveal Foster, Rhodes, Stuhler, Kable, and Myers.

The field settled into an extended green flag period with Foster leading the way. It took Stuhler four additional laps (lap 11) to wrestle second away from Rhodes. Foster's advantage over second place was dwindling through each corner. Stuhler rapidly reeled in the leader as the next caution flew on lap 18. Foster, Stuhler, Rodney Franklin from fifteenth, Rhodes, and Kable constituted the top five.

One more lap was in the books when the next caution flew. In that span of time, Stuhler had whisked away the lead from Foster. Stuhler, Foster, Franklin, Rhodes, and Kable formed the top five.

Another caution waved for Jack Pencil. High-flying Bo Feathers, from twenty-second, replaced Kable in fifth. The top five reshuffled and included Stuhler, Foster, Franklin, Rhodes and Feathers.

Nine more laps were recorded prior to a flurry of cautions on laps 34 and 35. One of them involved hard-charging Feathers relegating him to the tail of the field for the restart. The revised top five now included Stuhler, Rhodes, Franklin, Booper Bare, and Foster.

Stuhler, performing masterfully, kept all of his challengers at bay despite the intense battle for second. On lap 38, Franklin vaulted past Rhodes into the runner-up spot and gave chase. Franklin was reeling in the smooth running Stuhler as the laps clicked off.

With just 10 laps to go, Tommy Armel cracked the top five after starting twenty-first. One lap later another caution flew tightening the field. Stuhler's advantage over Franklin evaporated, as Franklin became glued to Stuhler's back bumper. The top five was amended and included Stuhler, Franklin, Rhodes, Bare, and Armel.

When racing resumed Stuhler fended off the challenges of Franklin. On lap 49 another caution flew. Series rules dictate that, when this situation arises, two more laps must be completed under green. The two-lap dash to the checkers found the top five comprised of Stuhler, Franklin, Bare, Rhodes, and Feathers, from his lap 34 misfortune.

Stuhler claimed the victory followed by Franklin, Bare, Rhodes, and Feathers. Andy Anderson, from eighteenth, Armel, David Hill, Bernheisel, and James Adkins embodied the next tier.

MACS fans Jim and Michelle Cardwell, Falls Church, VA, contributed $50.00 to the third place finisher, Booper Bare.

Calico Coatings gift certificate winners were Gary Stuhler $125.00; Bo Feathers was the event's hard-charger; however, he did not carry the Calico decal. The award was then given to Tommy Armel (hard charger) $75.00; Jeff Ferguson $50.00 and Kenny Pettyjohn $50.00

MACS Facts:
