Moyer Back in Victory Lane once again....

July 9, 1999

One night after getting his 5 race win streak broken, Billy Moyer took care of business, and returned to his familiar place to be after a UMP Summernationals race; Victory Lane.

After a dissapointing 6th place finish at Macon on Thursday, in which the Batesville Arkansas driver failed to finish on the lead lap, all eyes were on Moyer to see how he would rebound.  And rebound he did, as Moyer took the lead at the halfway point following a caution, and never looked back.  At the outset of the feature Kevin Weaver in the Elrod Grain/ Terra International/Eaglin Motorsports/Mastersbilt, took the lead as he has done four times this week.  Weaver pulled out to a nice lead by working the bottom of the track and expertly handling lapped traffic on the 1/4 mile track which featured many grooves.  After a lap 25 caution for Gary May, Moyer slipped around Weaver, and never looked back.  The Petroff Towing/B Auto Parts/Burroughs Diesel Service/J&J Steel/Clements Racing Engine/GRT, was not to be stopped, and went unscathed the rest of the way.  Weaver came home in second, Roger Long in the Tampico Citrus Punch/Sullivan Transport/Budda Enterprises/Bullitt came home third. Fourth place honors went to Shannon Babb in the 10-10-220/ GVS Racing/G&C Enterprises/True Speed Fastwear.com/Rayburn, with Ed Dixon in the Althorff Trucking/Dupont/ Casey's General Store/Rayburn rounding out the top five.  Steve Hillard, Billy Drake, Bob Pierce, Joe Ross Jr, and Mike Mullvain rounded out the top ten.

The heat races earlier in the show provided some excellent action with many side by side battles. Heat winners were;Mark Anderson, Billy Drake,Steve Hillard, and Bob Pierce.

The Semi-Feature concluded with a spectacular three wide battle for the two transfer spots, which Rick Aukland, and Joe Harlan got, and Robbie Starnes was on the outside looking in.

Notes: It appears that Jimmy Frey, who has been staying out of the limelight this season, until just recently has made a difference in Shannon Babb's program.  Consistency has been remarkable this week, and the set-up has been almost perfect.  Hopefully, everyone involved in the decision making of the GVS,and Babb teams realize this, and will retain Jimmy's services for the remainder of the season.....Robbie Starnes was dealing with many issues on Friday, which included the fact that his teenage daughter underwent emergency brain surgery on Friday.  As of this evening, the younger Starnes was in recovery, and seemd to be doing better.  It seems that a shunt that she has, worked it's way loose, requiring the operation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family......1998 UMP National Champ, Mark Faust, has stuck with the series for a little longer, as he plans to race Fairbury, then head home.  It is a nice thing to actually get to see the champion run the series, as that has not happened some in the past couple of years....With 48 cars in the pits, this race has featured the highest car count so far, with more expected on Saturday when the stakes are raised with the start of the $10,000 to win homestretch.
