By Lynn Acklin
Huntsville, AL

DOUGLASVILLE, GA--The Southern All Stars Topless Bandit Series rolled into
the Seven Flags Speedway Saturday night for a 40 lap $2,000 to win event and
the local Lamar Haygood stole the show as he set fast time with a 16.09
second lap and then proceeded to lead every lap of to score his first career
win with the series.
Haygood started on the front row along with Joe Armistead Sr, and on the
first lap Haygood took the lead and Armistead Sr, got freight trained back
to the seventh spot, before he got his car settled down and in line with the
rest of the field.
Although Haygood lead every lap it was not easy as he had the competiton
behind him as 1997 SAS Topless Bandit Champion Rodney Dickson of
Fayetteville, GA, was right behind and made several attempts to get around
him, but Dickson just could not get his car to work where he needed it to
work and settled for the second spot, after a last place finish the night
before at Penton.  Third place was another surprise as Greg Knight of
Suwanee, GA, got to the track late qualified fourth and finished in the
third spot to record his best finsih of the year with the series.  Fourth
place belonged to Joe Armistead Sr., who recovered from the start and worked
his way back into the top five and in the fifth spot was Wheel, TN, driver
David Gentry who cut into the point lead of John Llewellyn once again as
Llewellyn broke a cranskshaft and ended up in the 11th spot.  Gentry is
currently 14 points behind Llewellyn.
Finishing in the sixth spot was Tony Kemp of Carrollton, GA, in his best
finish of the season with the series, seventh to Ken Rupp who was in the top
five with less than five laps remaining when he ran upon a lapped car and
had to get out the gas and was passed.  Eighth place went to Mike Head who
was in the Jamey Cagle car as Head did not have a 362 or less cubic inch
motor for the series.  Ninth place went to Joe Armsitead Jr, even though he
crashed hard into the backstretch wall at the end of the race as the bolt
came out the of the a-arms and in the tenth spot was Jody Coltrane of
Canton, GA, who recover from a lap one crash to finish in the top ten.
