SOUTHERN ALL STAR RACING SERIES
 (SUPER LATE MODEL DIRT SERIES)

Jeff Smith Get Career First Southern All Star Win At Atomic

By Lynn Acklin
HUNTSVILLE, AL

KNOXVILLE, TN--The Southern All Stars returned to the 1/3 mile clay oval
Atomic Speedway Saturday night and what the drivers saw when they got there
was new clay on the surface and what they got was three wide racing all the
way around and a side by side racing all night.  That made for some of the
best racing seen at Atomic in years by many of the locals that were part of
the overflowing crowd on hand to watch young Jeff Smith of Kings Mt, NC, in
his first year with the series and currently the BTW/LATE MODEL AMERICA
Rookie of the Year points leader score his first win and do it coming from
the 15th starting spot.
36 cars were entered in the event and current points leader Jamie Perry of
Ringgold, GA, set fast time with a 13.08 second lap and started on the pole
along with another Knoxville area favorite Vic Hill.  On the start Perry and
Hill were together and as the two came off turn two Perry was sliding down
the track and caught the cars of Rex Richey and Mike Hill ending their
nights early.
Perry lead the field into the first turn and Randle Chupp moved under Hill
to take over the second spot, third to Hill and fourth to Steve Smith.
Chupp would run Perry down in the straights, but Chupp could set his car up
in teh corner just right as that is were Perry would get the advantage.
Patrick Duggan of Lenior City, TN, made a strong run to the front and got
to the third spot until he and Vic Hill made contact sending Duggan to the
pits with a flat tire ending his chances.  Hill would later drop out in a
back straightaway wreck.
Perry continued to lead the field, and would build a comfortable lead over
Chupp who in the second spot only to have a caution slow the field down.
Chupp passed Perry on lap 33 and then he was the next car in line as Smith
was working through the traffic and coming to the front.
Smith who is in his first year with the series was slowly working his way
up from his 15th starting position and played the patience game and the car
worked good on the bottom, then both the top and the bottom of the track.
Another duo of drivers that worked to get up front was 1997-98 Southern All
Star Chmapion Roger Best of Maryville, TN, and Scott Seexton of Pigeon
Forge, TN., these two hooked up and both were coming to the front, with
Sexton completly losing it twice in turn four and saving his car and Best
three wheeling all the way around the track.
On lap 41 Smith made his pass of Chupp that brought the rest of the
standing room crowd on their feet as Smith and Chupp battled side by side
for one lap and Smith emerging as the leader.  Smith survived two more
caution flags and held off one more Chupp challenge to capture his first win
in the series.  Second went to Randle Chupp of Knoxville, TN,  third to
Roger Best in his season best finish with the series as he came from the
13th starting spot, fourth to Scott Sexton who was pushed across the line
side ways by Duayne Hommel of Parrottsville, TN., in fifth and Jamie Perry
of Ringgold, GA, in sixth.  Seventh to Mike Head of Ellenwood, GA, who
started in the 23rd spot, eight place went to Stan Amacher of Tullahoma, TN,
as he came from the 22nd starting spot, John Llewellyn of Knoxville, TN,
came in ninth as he started 18th and tenth went to Tim Roszell of Anniston,
AL, who started 24th
