SOUTHERN ALL STAR RACING SERIES

(SUPER LATE MODEL DIRT SERIES)

John Jones Back In SAS Victory Lane At Cleveland

CLEVELAND, TN -- The 9th Annual Southern All-Star "Jean Johnson Memorial

Race" went off with a roaring thunder of thirty-five Super Late Models

competing for the $3,000 first place prize. In "BudLight Qualifying Time

Trials Shawn Chastain of Murphy NC. shocked the crowd, when he turned a fast

lap of 15:742 seconds around the 1/3 mile dirt track. John Jones qualified

second fast and Kent Hicks, Jamie Perry and rookie Jerry Coffman timed third

thru fifth.

With the top eighteen qualifiers locked in, two "B" Main Consi’s lined up

transferring only the winner and runner up. Local driver Phillip Davis won

the first consi. with Tim Roszell transferring too. Carnell Parker won

consi. #2 with James Cline finishing in the runner-up spot. Stan Amacher and

Mike Head took S.A.S. provisional’s to make the show. As the field took the

green flag,

Jones jumped out front with Chastain, Perry, Coffman and Hicks following.

The yellow yielded the field for Johnney Chastain on the first lap, when he

spun collecting three others in turn two. The rather lengthy caution was

followed by twenty green flag circuits with Jones running away from the rest

of the field. Perry and Lamar Scoggins dueled lap after lap side by side,

with Scoggins on the outside of the track. Back marker traffic hindered

Scoggins progress, allowing Perry to get back the second position. Hicks

reared the second yellow flag spinning in turn two.

The restart only took five circuits before Scoggins great run would end

rearing the third caution. J. Chastain reared another caution on the

restart, which would be the last yellow for the 50 lap feature. David

Millians and Paul Tims fought forward by Coffman and Dewayne Smith to finish

fourth and fifth. Jones hid from all winning by almost a half a lap, in his

"Fisher Paint & Body, J&M Jones Racing, Race Engine Design" red # J1

racecar. Perry and S. Chastain finished second and third fourth went David

Millians of Rossville, GA., and fifth to Paul Tims of Georgetown, TN,

Jeff Smith of Kings Mt, NC, has his best Cleveland finish of the year with

a sixth place run, seventh went to Danny Peoples of Margaret, AL, eighth to
