SOUTHERN ALL STAR RACING SERIES

(SUPER LATE MODEL DIRT SERIES)

Duayne Hommel Gets Carrer First SAS Win At Green Valley

By Lynn Acklin

HUNTSVILLE, AL

GADSDEN, AL--The Southern All Star Super Late Models returned to the Green

Valley Speedway for the first time in three years and the fans were treated

to one of the best races of the year at the 3/8ths mile facilty.

39 cars checked into the speedway and after qualifying was done Ronnie

Johnson of Chattanooga, TN, picked up where he left off from the Bandit

event earlier in the year as he set fast time with the rookie Duayne Hommel

on the outside front row.

On the start Johnson took the lead ahead of Hommel and current points

leader Jamie Perry of Ringgold, GA, into the third spot with Jody

Summerville of Rome, GA, fourth and Rex Richey of Ringgold, GA, fifth.

Perry moved to the inside of Hommel and took over the second spot and looked

as though he may have something for Johnson as Johnson was strong from the

start and built a good lead over the second place car.

On lap 36 is when things started to happen as Johnson slowed going down the

backstretch with motor problems giving the lead to Perry who now was also

developing a mechanical problem with his motor.

On the restart Perry fired, but his motor was down on power and Hommel

went to the outside and moved around Perry to take over the top spot.

Hommel was now setting the pace for the final 14 laps as he was looking at

winning his carrer first SAS event.

John Jones was now in the second spot as he moved from his 7th starting

position and he was trying hard to get the high side to work for him and

make a run at Hommel. Jones did manage to pass Hommel, but the caution flag

came out and by SAS rules you have to go back to the last completed green

flag lap for the restart.

The final five laps Hommel worked his way ahead of the second place Jones

as Jones got into a battle with Jon Miller of Cullman, AL, coming from his

12th starting position to take over the second spot with two laps remaining

and record his best SAS finish of the season. Jones came in the third spot

with Rex Richey fourth and Greg Skinner of Oxford, AL, coming home in the

fifth position.

The sixth spot belonged to Jamie Perry who struggled to hold on to a top

ten finish with and hang on to the points lead, seventh to David Smith of

Ooltewah, TN, in his career best finish with the series, eighth to Terry

Smith of Anniston, AL, ninth Stan Amacher of Tullahoma, TN, and tenth to Bo

Shirley of Gadsden, AL.
