SOUTHERN ALL STAR RACING SERIES

(SUPER LATE MODEL DIRT SERIES)

Mike Duvall Get Third Stick Elliott Win In Cherokee Southern All Star Run

By Lynn Acklin

HUNTSVILLE, AL

GAFFNEY, SC--The Southern All Stars Super Dirt Late Model Series returned to the high banked super fast 1/2 mile Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, SC, and in front of huge crowd Mike Duvall came away with his third Stick Elliott win and his first win with the Southern All Star this year.

Duvall set fast time with a 19.66 second lap giving him the pole with defending Stick Elliott Champion Ricky Weeks on the out side, Ronnie Johnson was in the third spot and Dennis "Rambo" Franklin was fourth.

At the drop of the green flag Weeks moved in front of Duvall as the field headed into turn one and when they came off turn two Weeks was the dominate car as he was pulling away from Duvall, Johnson, Franklin and Jeff Smith. Duvall started to close the gap on lap 20 as smoke was starting to show from Weeks car. Duvall moved under Weeks to take over the top spot as Weeks pulled into the pits ending his night with a burnt piston.

During this time the only major scare of the night came as Pete Broughton of Wimauma, Fl, came down the frontstretch and his car was engulfed in flames. His car rolled into turn one where Broughton got out uninjured.

At the halfway point Duvall was on the point with Franklin in second,Johnson third, Smith fourth and Petey Ivey in the fifth spot. Then on lap 34 Dennis Franklin came to a stop on the frontstretch with a broken axle ending his chances at taking the $5,000 first place money.

The last half of the race was ran caution free as Ronnie Johnson and Jeff Smith battled it out for the second spot and Petey Ivey and Mike Gault were battling for the third spot. At the end though Duvall was left unchallenged and took the win, with Johnson holding off Smith for the second spot, Petey Ivey came in fourth and Mike Gault fifth.Rounding out the top ten were Ed Basey, Doug Sanders, Dick Schiltz, Steve Phillips and Steve Hendren.

The SAS Points battle became even closer as current points leader Jamie Perry fell out of the race with just five laps remaining and Smith finishing in the third spot closed to within 10 points with the next event at Talladega Short Track.

The next Southern All Star Super Late Model event will be on Saturday night October 16th at the Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL, a 50 lap $3,000 to win event.
