MACS at Muskingum
Jeff Geesey, Public Relations Director

(Indiana  PA) The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series marked its tenth show of the season with its inaugural visit to Ronnie Moran's Muskingum County Speedway, Zanesville, OH. The program featured a 40-lap, $4,000 to-win show. This event drew thirty-one drivers from five states including Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Thirty-one year, hometown hero, John Wyer, Zanesville, OH captured his first career MACS victory in his first-ever start with the Series. John was the seventh different driver to visit victory lane on the highly competitive Series' trail. Wyer an owner/operator drives a Rocket, powered B.A.H., mounted with Hoosier Tires. John's supporters are Gene Wyer Trucking; Wyer's Body Shop; SEPI Inc.; Walter Inc.; Dick's performance.

The field was narrowed down to the quickest 24 from three heats and the B Main. The top two finishers from each heat redrew for the top six starting spots. Luck smiled early on Norm Aronhalt and Greg Baumberger as they drew the front row. Eventual winner, John Wyer, was slotted in fourth

As racing began, Aronhalt jumped out to the lead as the entire field swirled around the 3/8 mile facility. Aronhalt was challenged from the start by Wyer. The top two were dogged by Scott Rhodes, Baumberger, and Larry Bond. The leaders set a rapid pace as they entered lapped traffic on lap 6.

Aronhalt tried to shed his competition by using the lapped cars as a buffer. The effort was constantly thwarted by Wyer. The first of two cautions flew on lap 11 for Series' regular, Scott Brode as his mount coasted to a stop in turn three. On the restart, Aronhalt was in command over Wyer, Rhodes, Baumberger, and Bond.

The leaders entered another wave of lapped cars on lap 16 with them wading heavily into the back of the pack. For every move Aronhalt made, Wyer checked it, as did Rhodes. With just ten laps to go, Wyer made his move for the lead. Blasting out of turn four, Wyer snatched the lead moving Aronhalt into second. Rhodes still third over Bond and Tye Long, who had advanced from his eleventh place start.

With five to go, Wyer continued to hold the point over the same four drivers as lapped cars again played into the game plans of the leader and his contenders. Aronhalt grabbed the lead on lap 38. Wyer was hoping he had one more move left for this foe as the two received the white flag. In a heroic move, Wyer dove under Aronhalt coming to the stripe and blazed to a very popular victory in front of the home town faithful. Aronhalt raced his heart out and had to settle for a disappointing second over Rhodes, Bond and Doug Dodd, who blazed his own path to the front after starting nineteenth.

Tye Long finished sixth over Doug Eaton; Robbie Blair; Chad Hina, from a provisional starting twenty-fourth and David Padula rounded out the top ten.

Upcoming MACS events will be Thursday through Sunday, July 22 - 25 for "Thunder in the Mountains Tour V." This year, the mini-series kicks-off Thursday, at Scott Farley's Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, W.V. The next night the Series travels to Raceway 7, Conneaut, Ohio, at Ron and Thelma Nielson's fine facility. The third stop, as has been the case for the last three years, Port Royal Speedway, Port Royal, PA. The finale is at the Indiana County Oval of Jack and Donna Lentz, Challenger Raceway. All four shows are 50 laps and pay $5,000 to-win with $20,000 posted nightly. One driver could win $20,000 for the mini-series.

MACS Junior Racer Club (JRC) winner of the night was eight-year old Cory Clark, Zanesville, OH. He received t-shirts and hats from Hoosier and McCreary Tire as well as a hat from Slavic Custom Racing shirts and Decals. He will receive an autographed, 5 x 7 victory lane photo, compliments of the Series.
