Mid-Atlantic Championship Series - MACS

Indiana, PA
August 21, 1999
By: Jeff Geesey

For Immediate Release:

The Will family warmly welcomed the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series, Saturday, August 21, for its second appearance of the season at Thunder Valley Raceway, Central City, PA. Thirty-eight drivers from five states including Delaware, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia gathered for the 40-lap, $4,000 to-win program.

Ten-year veteran, Todd Andrews, Eldred, PA, made his second appearance in the winner's circle this season, also marking his ninth career MACS win.
This elevated Todd into a two-way tie at the top of the leader board  with Greencastle, PA., native Gary Stuhler.  Each driver now owns nine Series wins.
Andrews pilots a Ford Probe, GRT Chassis, clad with Hoosier, and powered by a 415 Malcuit Ford. Todd's boosters are Hamill Enterprises; Chase to the Checkers; Andrews Auto Salvage; Phase II Decals and Dirt Late Model Magazine.

A fleet group, 26 drivers were gleaned  from four heats and two B Mains.
Jeff Ferguson, whose stock continues to climb since venturing out with the Series, and Alan Sagi, making his fourth Series start of the season, comprised the front row. Eventual winner, Todd Andrews, sat in sixth.

Ferguson pounced on the early lead and looked fabulous.  Jeff's smooth style left all the contenders in his wake. Rhodes slotted into second and immediately gave chase, followed by Andrews, Sagi, and Mike Altobelli.  Ferguson truly set a blistering pace. The top five remained unchanged through the first twelve circuits.

Ferguson's pace hurled him head long into lapped traffic by lap 13.  On lap 14, Bob Salathe from ninth, caught the lead group and moved into fifth, displacing Altobelli. Lapped traffic played a key role in driver strategies as the super smooth, wide surface permitted three-wide racing for position.

The sixteenth revolution found Andrews catapulting into second relegating Rhodes to third.  One lapped car separated the leader, Ferguson, and Andrews.
At the beginning of lap 17, Andrews had disposed of the lapped car and Ferguson was squarely in his sights. Coming to the stripe for lap 18, Andrews whisked past Ferguson into the lead.  Andrews wasn't alone in the quest for the win.
Several drivers had their own designs on the winner's purse.  Top five at the half-way mark included Andrews, Ferguson, Rhodes, Sagi and Salathe.

Salathe maneuvered his way into fourth during the twenty-fifth stanza.  The first of three late race cautions flew on lap 28, the only thing slowing the field's blistering pace. This caution involved Altobelli and Jeremy Miller  ending two fine, top ten runs.  The revised top five included Andrews, Ferguson, Sagi, Salathe, and Rhodes.During the caution, Ferguson's tires cooled down.  When the field again received the green, several drivers blew past him.

With ten laps remaining, the new top five was composed of Andrews, Sagi, Salathe, Rhodes and Ferguson. The third and final caution flew on lap 36, setting a four-lap dash to the checkers.  On the restart, the top five were Andrews, Sagi, Salathe, Rhodes and Ferguson. The final four circuits were witness to drivers dicing for the win but Andrews held off all challenges.  Second through fifth went to Sagi, Salathe, Rhodes and Ferguson, respectively.
The next flight of five included Brode, from eleventh; Andy Fries; Jim Bernheisel from fifteenth; Rob Blair from twelfth; and Dave Groves, from eighteenth, subbing for Ron Slavic.

MACS Junior Racer Club (JRC) winner of the night was twelve-year old Casey Shaffer, Myersdale, PA.She received t-shirts and hats from Hoosier and McCreary Tire, as well as a hat from Slavic Custom Racing Shirts and Decals. The Series provided the winner with a MACS checkered flag.

Calico Coatings gift certificate winners: Todd Andrews $125.00; Lynn Geisler (Hard Charger) $75.00; Jeff Madsen$50.00; Larry Wright $50.00

The next three MACS shows include Friday, August 27, at Ron and Thelma Nielson's Raceway 7, Conneaut Ohio, for a $5,000 to-win show plus the Crawford/Bossard GMC "Super 7 Shootout."  Total purse is nearly $24,000 for the evening.

Saturday, September 4, the Series' inaugural visit takes place at Dennis and Peggy Shutt's McKean County Raceway, E. Smethport, PA, for the "Hubber 50" paying $5,000 to-win.The 50-lap program sports a $21,000 total purse.

Sunday, September 5, finds the Series moving to Bedford Speedway, Bedford PA, for the 11th Annual Bedford 55 paying $5,055 to-win from a $23,000 purse.
This program provides fifth place $1,000 while $600 goes to tenth and $300 to start.
