FRYE HOLDS OFF LATE SCHLIEPER CHALLENGE FOR ROME HAT VICTORY

ROME, GA - Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR held off a late-race challenge from
Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI to win the Georgia Tool & Equipment Rental 100 for the United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series on Saturday night at Rome Speedway.

Frye's first Hav-A-Tampa win of the season driving the UniFirst Uniforms
Warrior/Grand Prix was worth $15,300.  Frye led all 100 laps after starting
on the pole position, but Schlieper's late-race rim-riding charge during the
last ten laps of the race brought the capacity crowd to their feet.

After a lap 66 restart, Schlieper went to the outside groove of the ½-mile
high-banked clay oval in his Performance Roofing Systems Rayburn/Monte
Carlo.  Schlieper chased down Frye, but lapped traffic slowed his progress.
Then a lap 88 restart gave Schlieper a clear shot at the leader, and he made
the most of it.

Schlieper caught Frye on lap 95, but the leader moved to the high side.
Schlieper tried the bottom to try and make a pass for the lead, but he
couldn't make the winning move.

"My crew told me to try the high side there at the end, so that's where I
went, and the car worked pretty good up there," Frye said.  "We've run up
front all year, but we have just come short for the win.  This win feels
good because we've been on the road for over three weeks now.  I'm really
looking forward to going home for a few days."

Schlieper's second place finish, combined with a July 11 win in Haubstadt,
IN has moved him from tenth to sixth in the Hav-A-Tampa point standings
during the past week.

"I've got to thank my brother Bill and Pro Power Engines for giving the
horsepower to run the top tonight," Schlieper said.  "This is a brand new
race car that hasn't seen a race track until this weekend.  When I tried the
outside, my crew told me my lap times were better, and to stay up there."

The race-within-the-race was between Dale McDowell of Rossville, GA and
Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR, as they battled for the HAT point lead.
Coming into the weekend, McDowell held a 15-point lead over Wallace.

Wallace drew first blood, as he earned two bonus points for setting fast
time honors for the sixth time this season on Friday night by driving his
Monday Trucking GRT/Monte Carlo around Rome Speedway in 13.819 seconds.  At
one point during the race, Wallace was third, and McDowell was sixth, which
at that point gave Wallace the point lead by two points.

But McDowell turned up the wick in his Dover Cylinder Heads GRT/Monte
Carlo, passing Wallace for the third spot on lap 83.  McDowell's third place
finish now gives him an 18-point lead over the fourth finishing Wallace.

Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC finished fifth in the Youngblood Concrete
GRT/Mustang, and sixth spot went to Terry English of Benton, KY in the AAA
Fence Rayburn/Monte Carlo.

Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN was running third early in the race, but
a flat tire sent him to the pits.  But the defending and three-time HAT
Champion charged back to finish seventh in the Miller Brothers Coal
Warrior/Mustang.  The 1993 HAT Champion Clint Smith of Griffin, GA charged
from the 20th starting spot to finish eighth in the Turkey Creek Snacks
Swartz/Monte Carlo.

Steve Francis of Ashland, KY drove his Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo
home to a ninth-place finish, and Rex Richey of Ringgold, GA came from the
22nd starting spot to round out the top ten in his Rayburn/Monte Carlo.

The next event for the Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series will be on July 23-24
at Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS with a $15,000-to-win 100-lap main event.
