IZZO TAKES POLE, AS THE FIRST 18 STARTING SPOTS FOR THE USA NATIONALS ARE SET

NEW RICHMOND, WI - The first 18 starting spots were set on Friday night for
Saturday night's United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt
Racing Series USA Nationals at Cedar Lake Speedway.  Tony Izzo Jr. of
Bridgeview, IL won the pole position after winning the first 20-lap Borla
Muffler Heat Race.

The qualifying format for the $40,000-to-win 100-lap main event saw the
first 24 qualifiers inverted for the start of heat race action, and the top
three finishers in each heat race went on the big show.  A late-afternoon
rain shower made for a tacky track that presented two and three-wide battles
for position throughout each heat race.

Izzo started his Jeff's Engine Masters GRT/Monte Carlo on the inside of the
second row of the first heat, and took the lead on the opening lap.
Hav-A-Tampa point leader Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR finished second
in the Monday Trucking GRT/Monte Carlo, and third went to Dale McDowell of
Rossville, GA in the Dover Cylinder Heads GRT/Monte Carlo with a last lap
pass.

Wallace leads McDowell by just 16 points in the HAT Championship points
chase going into the USA Nationals.  Wallace will start on the inside of the
fourth row on the grid, and McDowell starts on the inside of row seven.

Rick Eckert of York, PA won the second heat wearing the Parker Store colors
on his Raye Vest Rocket/Grand Prix.  Eckert will start on the outside of the
front row beside Izzo for the big show.  Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR
finished second in the UniFirst Uniforms Warrior/Grand Prix, with third
going to Marshall Green of Dalton, GA in the Hatfield Engines Warrior/Monte
Carlo.

Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL won the third heat in the 10-10-220
Rayburn/Monte Carlo and will start the USA Nationals from the inside of the
second row.  The spot went to the 1997 HAT Champion Billy Moyer of
Batesville, AR in the Petroff Towing GRT/Grand Prix, followed by Lance
Mathees of Winona, MN in a Fegers/Monte Carlo.

Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN will start his Curtis Equipment GRT/Monte Carlo
from the outside of the second row after winning the fourth heat race.  The
1996 HAT Champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN finished second in the
Christenberry Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo.

Smith spent most of the race looking from the outside in while riding in the
fourth spot.  A slam-bang battle for second spot between Terry Phillips of
Springfield, MO and Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI had Smith in the right
place at the right time after the two second place combatants made contact.
Phillips in the Sportsman Pick-Up Covers GRT/Monte Carlo recovered for
third.

Clint Smith of Griffin, GA drove his Turkey Creek Snacks Swartz/Monte Carlo
to victory in the fifth heat race, and will start the main event from the
inside of the third row.  Following the 1993 HAT Champion under the
checkered flag were Russ Scheffler of Waukesha, WI in the McDonalds
GRT/Monte Carlo and Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC in the Youngblood Concrete
GRT/Mustang.

Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN won the sixth heat race from the outside
of row two.  The defending and three-time HAT Champion started there after
out qualifying the 59 entrants with a lap around the 1/3-mile clay oval in
14.297 seconds in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Mustang.  Bloomquist will
take the green flag Saturday night from the outside of row three.

Second and third spots respectively in the sixth heat race were Brian
Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA in the Birkhofer Racing GRT/Monte Carlo and Steve
Francis of Ashland, KY in the Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo.

The 19th through 22nd starting spots will be determined through two 25-lap
Consolation Races before the main event on Saturday night.  Starting spots
23 and 24 will be HAT Provisionals, and two promoter's options will round
out the 26-car starting field.
