AUKLAND DIALS IN FOR THIRD HAT WIN - WALLACE NEW POINT LEADER
LaSALLE, IL - Rick Aukland of Fargo, ND took the lead on lap 30, and then
checked out on the field to win the $10,000 top prize in Tuesday night's
United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series main
event at LaSalle Speedway.
The victory was Aukland's third of the HAT season driving the 10-10-220
Mastersbilt/Grand Prix. The event also marked Aukland's second clean sweep
in HAT competition this season, as he was the fast qualifier, and the first
12-lap Borla Muffler Heat Race winner.
Just six hours before the race, Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, IL stepped
into a new ride, and brought the Rayburn/Grand Prix home in the second spot,
although he was a half-lap behind Aukland on the ¼-mile clay oval.
Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR finished third in the Monday Trucking
GRT/Monte Carlo, and took over the point lead from Dale McDowell of
Rossville, GA. McDowell, after leading ten laps of the race, finished
eighth in the Dover Cylinder Heads GRT/Monte Carlo. Wallace now has a
16-point lead over McDowell.
Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR finished fourth in the UniFirst Uniforms
Warrior/Grand Prix and the fifth spot went to Steve Francis of Ashland, KY
in the Action Auto Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo. Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC
hustled his Youngblood Concrete GRT/Mustang from the 21st starting spot to
finish sixth, and took over the HAT Distaff Promotions Hard Charger point
lead.
Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN finished seventh in the Christenberry
Trucking and Farms GRT/Monte Carlo, followed in the top ten by McDowell, Dan
Schlieper of Pewaukee, WI in the Performance Roofing Systems Rayburn/Monte
Carlo, and Rick Eckert of York, PA in the Raye Vest Rocket/Grand Prix.
Smith took the early lead at the drop of the green flag from the outside
of
the front row, followed by second row outside starter McDowell, and pole
sitter Aukland. McDowell moved by Smith after a lap 20 restart down the
backstretch to take the lead, and Aukland moved by Smith for second on lap
23.
By lap 29, Aukland moved up to race McDowell side-by-side for the lead,
and
made the pass stick on lap 30. From there, Aukland never looked back, as
he
packed his bags, turned in the key, and checked out on the field.
"The track was in great shape tonight for our set up," Aukland
said. "The
car worked especially well on the bottom, but I could just about drive it
anywhere I wanted to get around lapped traffic."
Aukland was the top qualifier among the 38 entries with a lap around the
¼-mile clay oval in 13.560 seconds. Aukland went on to win the first heat
race, while Smith, Wallace and McDowell took the other three. The Pace
American Trailers 1st 12-lap Consolation Race was won by Ron Fisher of
Lisle, IL, and the Polaris ATVs 2nd 12-lap Consolation Race was won by Bob
Pohlman of Oak Lawn, IL.
The cars and stars of the Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series now travel north to
Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI for the $40,000-to-win USA Nationals
100 this Friday and Saturday night in front of the Speedvision television
cameras. The action gets underway on Thursday evening for a three-hour
practice session.
