MOYER WINS UPHILL BATTLE FOR BROWNSTOWN VICTORY
BROWNSTOWN, IN - Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR had an uphill climb to his
fifth United Dirt Track Racing Association Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series
win of the season Saturday night in the 20th Annual Jackson 100 at
Brownstown Speedway driving the Petroff Towing GRT/Grand Prix.
Moyer qualified 30th out of 46 entries on Friday night to start eighth in
the second Borla Muffler Heat Race. Only the top four finishers went on to
the big show, but Moyer charged to a third place finish to line up 10th on
the grid Saturday night.
It took Moyer 68 methodical laps to move through the pack and take the
lead
from Steve Francis of Ashland, KY, and go on to collect the $15,000 top
prize and his third Jackson 100 victory.
"It wasn't easy, as we had a tough climb to get this win tonight, but
the
car was working great everywhere on the race track," Moyer said.
"I thought
the track was in great shape tonight, hard and slick from top to bottom, and
that's the way I like them."
The race went caution-free for the first 92 tours. On lap 93 Brian
Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA lost the driveshaft under his GRT/Monte Carlo.
Moyer didn't want to see the caution flag, and it was especially costly for
Francis.
"I would have rather seen the race go all the way to the checkered
flag,"
Moyer said. "When you get a late caution flag like that, sometimes
the
tires will glaze over, but this time ours didn't."
Francis was suffering from a race-long push condition in his Action Auto
Mart Rocket/Monte Carlo, and the caution flag made it worse after the
restart. That enabled Bob Pierce of Oakwood, IL to make the pass for
second
spot in his Murphy Trucking Rayburn/Monte Carlo.
"This is the fourth time out for this new Rayburn car, and it worked
great
tonight," Pierce said. "We don't use radios, so it was hard for
me to tell
where everybody was in traffic. That caution flag there at the end really
helped us get a clear race track."
Francis hung on for third spot to remain third in the Hav-A-Tampa points
chase and close to within 73 points of HAT point leader Wendell Wallace of
Batesville, AR.
"The next three Hav-A-Tampa races are at Florence Speedway (August
28),
Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway (September 3), and Atomic Speedway (September
4-5), and those are three tracks I do well at," Francis said.
"There are
enough races left (8) and I think we've got a chance for the title."
Wallace finished 18th in the Monday Trucking GRT/Grand Prix. Dale
McDowell
of Rossville, GA finished 14th in the Dover Cylinder Heads GRT/Monte Carlo,
and closed to within 15 points of Wallace in the Championship hunt.
Bill Frye of Greenbrier, AR finished fourth in the UniFirst Uniforms
Warrior/Grand Prix. Moyer and Frye's finishes in the Jackson 100 took them
over the $100,000 mark in season earnings to join Wallace, McDowell, Francis
and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN in the six-figure club.
Rick Aukland of Fargo, ND rounded out the top five in the 10-10-220
Mastersbilt/Grand Prix. Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN finished sixth,
followed by Rick Eckert of York, PA, 1996 HAT Champion Freddy Smith of
Knoxville, TN, fast qualifier Skip Arp of Georgetown, TN, and Jim Curry of
Brownstown, IN in the top ten.
Francis took the race lead from the outside of the front row at the drop
of
the green flag followed by polesitter Marshall Green of Dalton, GA, Pierce
and Frye. Moyer's biggest move of the race came on the opening lap, as the
1997 HAT Champion blasted from the 10th starting hole to fifth using the
outside groove.
By the 30th lap, Francis led Frye, Moyer, Pierce and Green. At the
halfway
point, Moyer had moved around Frye for second, and began to reel in Francis.
Moyer closed in on Francis on lap 62, as the leaders worked heavy lapped
traffic.
Moyer was able to get underneath Francis in turn three on lap 64, but
Francis held him off to keep the point. On lap 68, Moyer once again worked
underneath Francis down the backstretch.
When Francis shut the door to protect his lead, Moyer stepped to the outside
in turn four to take the lead he would never relinquish. By lap 80, Moyer
had stretched out a full straightaway lead over Francis.
After taking next weekend off, the HAT Series will return to action on
August 28 for the $15,000-to-win North-South 100 at Florence Speedway in
Union, KY.
