Portsmouth Raceway

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -. For the second week in a row, Delmas Conley made a late pass Saturday, July 31, to claim the late model A Main at Portsmouth Raceway Park.

After winning with a charge out of the final turn a week earlier, the veteran Wheelersburg driver went to the lead a little earlier Saturday. He moved around Jackie Boggs of Grayson, Ky following a restart with four laps to go.

Conley took the lead from the pole, only to see Boggs, who started outside him, grab the point on lap five. Boggs twice built huge leads and was well in front of Conley when the final caution flag flew with four laps to go.

The final four circuits saw a lot of shuffling behind the leaders. Butch Dowdy of South Shore, Ky., moved from 5th to claim third, Bob Adams Jr. of Racine was running seventh when the caution fell. He nipped Barry Bragdon of Wheelersburg at the checkered flag to claim fourth,

The late pass earned Adams the Timberwolf Hardcharger Award for improving seven positions.

Points leader Craig Leist of Waverly slid back in the closing laps, but still finished sixth to extend his lead over runner-up Bill Bocook to 140 points.

The biggest bomber race of the season was actually a race for second place.

Bo Cox took the lead on the first lap from the outside pole and left everybody in the dust as he won the Bomber Shootout and the $1,000 first prize. The win was the eighth of the season and marked the second time this season he has won four consecutive features.

Bubby McCarty applied some early pressure, but he dropped out on lap three with mechanical problems.

With McCarty's exit R L Lute moved into second and Gary Blevins took third, They continued in those positions until the finish.

After a season of hard luck, Eddie Harmon of Ironton put things together to lead every lap in winning his first modified feature of the season.

His mentor, Randy Boggs of Grayson, Ky., started beside Harmon and ran second all the way, except for a few brief seconds on lap 12- Points leader Tony Dehart extended his lead with a third place finish.

John Burdette was the main threat to Harmon. After starting  10th he sliced through the field. Burdette briefly took second place as he finally got around Boggs going into turn three , but immediately spun out

Although starting third, John Melvin of Coal Grove had the lead at the end of one lap and ran away from their field to capture his seventh street stock A Main- He has won five of the last seven features.

Wayne Maffet Jr. of Mansfield finished second with Mike Steele of Catlettsburg running third Greg Vaughn, runner-up behind Melvin in the points, took fourth, which allowed Melvin to extended his lead to 140.

Final preparations are being made for the biggest night of the season at PRP as the STARS invade Saturday, Aug. 7, for the Cornett Clash.
