CUSHING, KAUFMAN,& ADKINS CUSHION LAKEVILLE POINTS LEAD WITH WINS

By M.D. Swanger
Lakeville Ohio, Friday July 30, 1999

Another hot night of races were run through Lakeville Speedway as 119 cars signed in the pits and three divisions saw their points leaders win the features to increase their points lead in the Lakeville Speedway / Goodyear Tire points standings on Coca-Cola night.
Mansfield's Jim Cushing led all the way in the American Payroll Advance late model feature for his second win of the year. The Rebman Truck Service, Ohio Machine & Repair, and Mansfield Senior High Auto Shop #00 had a race long battle with J.R. Gentry as the young star was able to pull along side of Cushing a couple of times but he was in a tussle to keep second away from Charlie Duncan in the first part of the race then had to come back with four laps to go to get past Ryan Markham, who had slipped past Duncan with ten laps to go and had passed Gentry with six to go. Mark Uhler motored into fourth on the last lap past a fading Duncan. Blaine Aber and Markham topped the heats as Roger Sims notched the win in the last chance race.
Kelly Kaufman of Wooster chalked up his third win of the year in the Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'A' main as the Reed Trucking #12 led flag to flag. There was tight racing going on behind Kaufman as Darren Blackford outdueled Joe Ryan Jr. for second as Roger Drouhard was right on their bumpers looking for an opening to get by but had to settle for fourth as Mike Lonas recovered from a stop on the track early in the race to gather in fifth. Heat winners were Rob Metz and Blackford.
Ashland's Paul Brown set the pace for the first five laps of the Hall's Auto Sales Street Stock 'B' feature as Scott Clantz moved through the field to take the lead for two laps before a flat tire stopped his run. Brown re-inherited the point and never looked back as he parked his Harpster Transfer, Ashland A&W Drive-in, and Balls-N-Stuff #73 in the Budweiser victory circle for the first time ever. Terrence Metz survived an early collision to claim second as Shawn Scott, 'B' points leader Charlie Van Sickle, and Bob Abrams filled out the top five. Clantz and Metz chalked up the heat wins.
Dan Hensel controlled the first 8 laps of the Rick Moore Motors Cruiser feature but Ashland's Russ Norris powered past with two laps to go to pocket his second win of the season in the Stu's Place #n17. It was a race long battle for third as Ed Brenneman, Craig Fry, and Rex Trussell sliced and diced positions lap after lap before finishing in that order. Jeremy Barnett, Fry, Trussell, and Hensel posted the heat wins while Scott Liston pulled out the win in the consi.
Big Prairie's Mark Adkins is still perfect in the 4-Cylinder Cruisers as he won for the third time but win #4 may be difficult as the #101 was claimed and he will have to come up with a new car for next week. Randy Harmon finished second for the third week in a row as those two won the heats. Rounding out the top five in the feature were Zach Medley, Bill Lemon, and Jamey Rose.
Regular racing continues next week with all classes in action then on Friday, August 13, the final crown of the Triple Crown Series will be held with $6,000 going into the pocket of the winner of the 60 lap race. Skip Watterman and Kevin Weaver will try to win their second crown. Race time is 7:30 p.m. every Friday night at Lakeville Speedway
