Cumberland Wins to Salathe, Gordon, Humberson

CUMBERLAND. MD July 31. Cumberland Raceway ran the 2nd round of the Coca-Cola Classic, a 30 lap race for the Price Budweiser Late Models. Two time Track Champion Bob Salathe, of Bedford, PA, won the race and is the current Point Leader of this 3 part race.

Bob Gordon, of Keyser WV, last years track champion, is On his way to this years title with win number 7 in the Hoosier Tire 20 lap Semi-late feature, and Point Leader Tom Humberson, of Grantsville, MD, got his 2nd win in the 15 lap Pro Stock Feature.

In the 23 car Late Model feature Rodney Franklin, in his 1st start at Cumberland, took the lead. By lap 3 Bob Salathe was on Franklin's tail. For the next 12 laps they raced side by side. on lap 16 Salathe got around Franklin for the lead. Coming through the field was some great racing between Chris Harr, Jack Pencil, Andy Fries and Scott Rhodes. But later in the race both Pencil and Fries were in the pits with flat tires. This was one of the best races of the season. At the checkered it was Bob Salathe getting his 2nd win this year followed by Chris Harr, Rodney Franklin, Scott Rhodes, Andy Fries coming from the rear after a flat tire to finish 5th, followed by Eric Zembower, J.R. Keifer, Todd Ritchey, Lance Elson, Larry Wright, Dave Hoover, Doug Horton, Dave Troutman, Bill VanMeter, Alan Lafferty, Jack Pencil, Bill Phares, Jeff Thomas, Brent Smith, Jeff Miller, and Jerry Foster. Dave Bloss and Duane Woolford did not start. Heat winners were Pencil and Fries.

"The Gang" gave Salathe $100 Bonus for the win.

In the Semi-late feature, Wade Peer, from the Pole, took the early lead with Greg Fetters, Kelly Bechtel and Brian Lowery in the chase. Meanwhile the hottest driver at Cumberland, Bob Gordon, started 11th. Lap after lap Gordon was reeling in Peer. By lap 13 Gordon passed Peer for the lead and the win. Peer finished 2nd. followed by Greg Fetters, Kelly Bechtel, Gary Kimmell, Allen Buckley, Brian Lowery, David Riley, Lester Beal, Eric Glotfelty, Seth Toner, and John Crowfis, Jr. Andrew Fertig, Wally Mowry, Mark Fost, and Bill Buchanan did not start.. Heat winners were Fetters and Cordon.

The Pro Stock feature was a real barn burner from start to finish. At the drop of the green John Whitfield took the lead and led until lap 3 when Kevin Weyandt went out in front. For the next 12 laps it became a Weyandt and Tom Humberson show. Humberson made a photo pass on lap 11 for the lead, Charging through the pack was Rodney Youman and Matt Sponaugle, but they could not get Humberson .At the checkered it was Tom Humberson the winner followed by Kevin Weyandt, Rodney Youman, Matt Sponaugle, Johnny Harr, Mike Harvey, Phil Madagan, Kevin Lint, J.R. Bowers, Bob Lewis, Bill Goss, Kelvin Bernard, John Whitfield, Daniel Cornman, George Beckett, John Steward, Ken Wilson, Rick Wright, and Jason Black. Heat winners were Humberson and Weyandt.

The Buckley’s Towing Jr. Fan Club winner was Sara Rafferty, of Frostburg, MD, and the Tri—State Racing Photos Hard Charger was Rodney Youman.

There are only 3 races left at Cumberland.

Next week is a Friday night racing show on August 6. This is a Double Feature for Semi—lates, plus the Late Models and Pro Stocks.

Saturday August 14 is the Pratts Tire Service 3rd and final Enduro to run 30 laps and it is also Fox’s Pizza Den Night.

The last round of the Coke--Cola Classic for Late Models is Friday August 20. This is the last race of the ‘99 season.
