RACEWAY 7

Dick Barton scores at Raceway 7

Conneaut, Ohio, (August 6)  Dick Barton was the big winner Friday night at Raceway 7.  The Ashville, NY driver scored his second Maloney Tool and Mold Late Model feature win of the season, as he outlasted the field through a couple of multi-car tangles. Also picking up feature wins were Chuck Steinle, Jr. of Lake City, PA in The Bolt Place Limited Late Models; Jay Watson of Conneaut, OH in the Corry Laser E-Mods; Rich Howell of Jefferson, OH in the Fame Manufacturing Street Stocks; and Jim Hyde of Springboro, PA in the Steve's Auto Body Four Cylinders.

The 20 lap Maloney Tool and Mold Late Model feature started with Dick Barton and Tony Lombardi on the front row.  Lombardi, making his first start here since ending up upside down in a wreck a month ago, moved into the early lead.  Lombardi's lead lasted only a lap, as Barton made a pass on the backstretch and was the new leader on lap 2.  Top five positions were changing each lap, as it finally settled down on lap 5 with Matt Urban, Ron Davies, Lombardi, and Rob Blair tracking race leader Barton.  The first yellow of the race slowed the pace on lap 6.  After a multi-car tangle on an attempted restart, it was still Barton showing the way.  But Davies and Blair got by Urban on the restart, as the yellow waved again on lap 7.  After another tangle on an attempted restart, the final 13 would go all green.  Barton pulled ahead of the field as Blair took second away from Davies.  The best battle was behind Urban for fourth, as Davies and Dan Armbruster raced for position.  Barton went on to score the win with Blair second, as the last couple laps were rather eventful behind them.  Third running Urban had problems and dropped out with the white flag waving.  Armbruster passed Davies late in their battle, but he suffered a flat tire on the last lap.  That let Davies recover to finish third, allowing him to pad his point lead.  Armbruster held on for fourth, with Mickey Wright getting fifth after going to the tail on lap 6.  Dale Applebee, Wally Fox, Mark Osburn, John Watson, and Frank Poniatowski completed the top ten.  Heat race winners were Wright, Rusty Whitmore, and Armbruster.
The 15 lap The Bolt Place Limited Late Model feature started with Ryan Herb and Tim Glass leading the field to green.  A first lap wreck on the front stretch knocked out both McDonald brothers, Percy and point leader Dan.  Glass took the early lead, but developed engine problems and exited the race.  Terry Porter took over the top spot on lap 3, and found a challenge from Chuck Steinle, Jr.  On lap 5, the leaders were side-by-side at the line with Steinle ahead by inches.  A later yellow would put him alone in the front row for the restart, as Bill Henry and Steve Hollabaugh challenged.  Steinle held a few car length lead, as a late yellow waved on lap 11.  That allowed Henry to close in, and they locked in a side-by-side battle for the lead.  Henry made a strong challenge, but Steinle held in front.  Off the final turn, Steinle got into the outside wall on the front stretch, but was able to make it across the line just before Henry.  Steinle was in victory lane without his car, as it was being hooked to a tow truck as he was celebrating his first feature win of the season.  Henry had a good run for a close second, with Mike Stoneman coming from 17th starting position to get third.  Hollabaugh was fourth, with John Buzzard fifth.  Dan McDonald and Tom Bonanno took the heat race wins.

The 15 lap Corry Laser E-Mod feature went to Jay Watson for the sixth time this season.  Watson started fourth, and moved by Randy Brooks on lap 3 to take over the top spot.  Once in front, Watson held off a mid-race challenge from Mike Hess in scoring the win to pad his point lead.  Larry Kugel made his first visit in a number of years, and advanced from 13th starting spot for second.  Hess was third, ahead of Bobby Powell and Bill Watson.  Jay Watson, Hess, Todd Roncaglione, and Alan Dellinger were heat race winners, while the Last Chance Race winner was Joe Welch.
The 12 lap Fame Manufacturing Street Stock feature saw Rich Howell score his first career feature victory.  Howell moved into the early lead from the outside pole, and pulled to an advantage before a lap 3 yellow flag slowed the pace.  Back to green, Howell had his hands full with Tony Hyde, before Hyde slipped off turn two on lap 7 and fell back.  Howell had race traffic in front with one lap to go, but the yellow flag waved to bunch up the field.  Howell kept in front on the one lap dash to the finish to score his memorable first-ever feature win.  Hyde was second, ahead of Leon Phillips, Dave Willoughby, and newcomer Jason Longwell.  Heat race wins went to Phillips, Bill Hanna, Jim Peska, and Howell, while Jeff Cusano took the Last Chance Race.
Continuing his streak in the Steve's Auto Body Four Cylinder feature was Jim Hyde, winning for the seventh time in a row.  Hyde moved to the front on a wild first lap after starting tenth.  Jay Rigg posted a tough challenge, but settled for second as Hyde notched his eighth feature win of the season.  Mark Kitinoja was third, ahead of Tom Hyde and Darrell Moody.  Jim Hyde and Turk Kahler took the heats.
Speedo the Clown entertained the crowd, which included guests from the Twin State Auto Racing Club.  Racing action continues on Friday night, August 13, as General Aluminum Night will see the York Triathlon Series for E-Mods will make their Raceway 7 debut after being rained out earlier  this season.  The Buckeye Challenge will pay $1000 to the winner, with all starters making at least $100.  Bicycle racing for the kids will take place on August 20, where kids will be admitted free.  The Late Model winner will qualify for the Hub City Race of Champions in October at Maryland's Hagerstown Speedway, and the Limited Late Models will race for $1000 extra purse money sponsored by Roberts Trucking.  The final MACS visit of the season will be on August 27 in a big show sponsored by Bossard-Crawford GM.  The Super 7 Shootout will be held for the top money earners from the four MACS races at Raceway 7.  The Grand Finale program will end the 1999 racing season on September 3, with Fireworks and a Demo Derby bringing down the curtain on the final racing program of the 1900's.  All five divisions will be in competition each night.  Raceway 7 is located six miles south of I-90 on Ohio Route 7.  For more information, call the track phone on race day at 440-594-2222, or visit the Raceway 7 web site at www.raceway7.com.
