McKean County

AUG—28—1999  ROD BIEHLER

Smethport, Pa. — Four new champions were crowned Saturday night at McKean County Raceway. Winning the point titles were Bob Close of Eldred, Pa. in the Late Model division. Dean Ingalls, Belmont, Ny. in the Super Stocks. Randy Parker, OIean, Ny. the Sportsman class and Mike Numeracki, Belmont, My. in the Street Stocks.

In the AMSOIL/R & K Home & Auto sponsored Season Championship Feature events there were three repeats and a first time winner.

In the 25 lap Late Model feature, Mike Wonderling of Wellsville, Ny. grabbed the early lead as he paced the 23 car field for 6 laps before giving way to Tim Hoffman. Hoffman of Clarendon, Pa. quickly motored out to a comfortable margin and was lapping the field at the halfway point of the race. Behind Hoffman a four car battle was going on for second. That included Rick Isadore, Jeff Hoffman, Brent Rhebergen and Bob Close. The second caution of the race on lap 19 tightened the field back up and gave those four trailing drivers a shot at Hoffman. With the green back out, Hoffman again pushed out to a three car length lead, as his brother Jeff Hoffman, Isadore & Close were unable to get by. Lap 23 saw Close move into second and with the white f lag out actually take lead. The final lap had the two running side by side going into turn three with Close at the bottom of the raceway and Hoffman at the top. at the checkers Hoffman edged Close by a nose to pick up his second Feature win of the year at MCR. In victory lane Hoffman noted that he got the bite off the lip of the track to grab the win. Incidentally the win was the four in a row for Hoffman who won the Woodhull Reunion Feature on August 14, then he won both his heat and the $1000 NAPA DASH for feature winners, before winning the Season Championship race. The remainder of the top five had Isadore in third, Jeff Hoffman fourth and Brent Rhebergen in fifth. Dutch Davies, Todd Andrews, Kenny Trevitz, Ed Carley and Ike Fanton completed the top ten. Heat wins went to Tim Hoffman, Davies and David Lyon.

The Championship was the second Late Model title for Close who beat Jeff Hoffman by 95 points for the crown.

In the super Stock 25 lap main event there were three lead changes with Tim Rockwell and Jason Wile both taking turns leading the 24 car field before Ed ‘Meatball" Armstrong of Eldred, Pa took the lead for good on lap 4. Armstrong held on through four cautions and the repeated challenges of Jeff Root and Kyle Bradigan to post his second win of the season, They finished in that order with Ron Baker taking fourth and Dave Miller finishing fifth, the remainder of the top ten included Todd Hanson, Dean Ingalls, Doug Peterson, Tim Schram and Bruce Miller. The seventh place finish of Dean Ingalls was good enough to give him the points title by 57 points over Rookie Jeff Root of Arcade, Ny. It was Ingalls fourth point championship of his racing career. In the three car NAPA DASH, Dave Miller posted the win worth $450. Heat winners included Armstrong, Tim Schram and Andy Miller.

The Sportsman main event was a real barn burner as Randy Parker of Olean, Ny and Eric Ensell of Portville, Ny, Were tied for the points lead going into the race. They started side by side in row eight and diced back and forth through out the entire 20 laps. Over the course of the race Les Clark was the initial leader before Randy Bootes took over on lap 20. A trailing Jim Myers took the lead on lap 18 following a caution after a flat tire caused leader Bootes to spin in turn four. Myers was then able to hold off a charging Gerry Schimp for his second feature win of the year at MCR. Larry Bigley finished a strong third followed by Scott Bigley and Randy Parker. Les Clark placed sixth, with Kelly Green, Eric Ensell, Ryan Bright and John Kemp Jr.  completing the tap ten. Parkers fifth place finish gave him the points title by 8 points over Ensell. Parker had previously won the Sportsman title in 1986 and then retired until last year. It is his second career title.

Sportsman heat winners were Vaughn Nystrom, Myers and Bootes. Mike Drasham won the consolation. Ensell won the $400 NAPA DASH.

The Street Stock 15 lap feature saw Jim Parmenter of Little Valley, Ny. take the lead on lap 4 from Don Williams and sail to his first win of the year. Parmenter survived three cautions and the charge of Harry Spaulding to notch the narrow win. Jim Cabado, Benji White and Keith Bidwell filled the third through fifth spots, the sixth through tenth positions were taken by Butch Williams, Randy Taylor, Mark Cline, Rick Tripodi and Craig Switzer. Mike Numeracki of Belmont, Ny won the over all points title as he finished twelfth to take the crown by 21 points over Mike Milford of Port Allegany, Pa. who placed twenty—first. Numeracki had led the division the entire year after winning the opening night feature, his only win this year at MCR, Going into the final night he had a 4 point edge over Milford. Heat winners on the night included Cline, Milford, Ashcroft and Spaulding. Craig "the Delivery Boy" Switzer won the seven car $100 NAPA DASH.

In the 21 car Street Stock B—Main. Wayde Thrush of Limestone1 Ny. nipped Gary Kurschner of Allentown, Ny for the win.
