       Lernerville

Sarver, PA August 27, 1999

After three days of continuous rain at Don Martin’s Lernerville Speedway, the supersaturated track could not handle the additional precipitation Friday afternoon.  The cancellation of the races completed the regular “Fab Four” events at the track and ended the Point’s Challenge.
The 1999 Champions and their respective divisions are as follows: Agip Motor Oil Sprints- Jimmy Hawley, West Middlesex; Friedman’s Supermarket’s/
Bi-Lo Foods Late Models- Dave Norton, Shinglehouse; Ferrante Oldsmobile Modifieds- Jim Weller, Hubbard, Ohio, and Dingbat’s Restaurant’s Pure Stocks- Joe Kelley of Mt. Pleasant.
Jimmy Hawley wrapped up his second consecutive Lernerville Point Title in Doc and Deb Crawford’s #CIII.  He may earn a tri-fecta this year, leading the division at Mercer and Tri-City also.  Hawley had eight victories this season.  “The most satisfying thing for me is that it’s especially nice for the guys who work on the car,” he said.  “It’s a reflection of the work they do.  We learned a lot this year.  A lot of times we didn’t look good in the heats because Matt Draskovic was trying something new.”  Hawley started his career with 1989 & 1994 champ Mark Cassella, Ed Lynch Jr-1990, Dale Blaney-1991, and Tim Shaffer-1993 and plans to run more sprint car specials next season.  “Its long overdue,”Hawley said.  “Most of the guys I started with have won before and moved on.”  Last year, Hawley had the Earl and Dave Bauman Memorial Race almost pocketed when mechanical problems plagued him the last five laps.
After ten year of racing Dave Norton has secured a career first Late Model Championship.  Operating on a low budget, Norton had not run for points.  Norton said, “Lernerville is a track that does not require me to buy tires every night and is easy on my equipment.”  Rebounding “back” from back surgery, Norton put his Lias Tire/Bellotti Trucking 1994 Larry Shaw Chassis in victory lane three times.  He gives special thanks to his wife Barb for all the hours spent working on the car, her friends who also put in time during the week, and to the fans who pull for the guy on a budget.
Claiming his second Modified Point Title is Jim Weller; the first was in 1997. 1999 was a banner year for Weller as he finished in the Top Six, 13 of 16 nights, and won two main events.   Weller switched his race car chassis this season.  He has been running a Bicknell Chassis compared to an Olsen last year.  “Basically when they (Bicknell) sold me the car, they said it would push,” Weller said.  “It pushes.  It hurts me more at Lernerville because I can’t run the cushion with it and we’ve tried everything.  Weller said, “The reason I changed was I was tired of being beaten by Bicknell Cars.”
Smiling Joe Kelly has won his second consecutive Dingbat’s Restaurant Pure Stock Championship.  At the beginning of the season, Kelley took about 250 pounds out of his car.  “We had a lot of extra metal inside.  So we just cut a lot of that out,” he said.  The result was 14 of 16 top six finishes in 1999 and four victories.  Joe’s main crewmember is his lovely wife Marci.  “We have a lot of fun at Lernerville, I’m always parked in the back row with Robert Kosecki and Butch Lambert.”  They are the three “amigos.”  Next season Kelley is going to concentrate on the E-Mod Division only.
Tonight Kevin Bolland announced his new sponsor for the rest of this season and 2000.  He has teamed up with Cintas the Uniform People, which is super match.
