Roger Long Takes Win at Fairbury!

(Fairbury IL)

August 28, 1999

After the past couple of dominating seasons for Roger Long, few would have figured that the Fithian IL driver would enter the final points night with just one feature win at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway, but that’s just what happened. However one win was not enough for Long, as he took the win in the 30-lap $1,200 to win UMP Late Model Feature. This Night also provided the final chance for drivers to tune up for the Prairie Dirt Classic.

Joe Harlan, who entered the night just 13 points out of the lead for the season championship, jumped to the lead on the start from his outside front row starting spot. Harlan, lead until lap 6 when, Long took the high-line around Harlan, and never looked back. Once out front, Long began to pull out to a comfortable margin, despite two cautions, which tightened the field. Behind Long, Harlan, Gary May, Mike Mullvain, and Bob Pohlman Jr. waged a battle for the second through fifth position. Charging from his 12th starting position, Steve Hillard pulled into the battle for position, by running across the bottom of the 1/3-mile oval. Hillard put his #47 into second place at the finish. Following Long, and Hillard at the finish were, Gary May, Mike Mullvain, and Bob Pohlman Jr. Rounding out the top ten were Dick Taylor, Ron Donaldsen, Bob Thoennes, Joe Harlan, and Matt Taylor. Roger Long’s Hixon Racing Engine powered Bullitt Chassis, is sponsored by Budda Enterprises, Tampico Citrus Punch, and Sullivan Farms. The finish resulted in 1-2-3 finish for Budda Enterprises which sponsors Long, Hillard, and May.

Bob Pohlman Jr., with a time of 13.39 set fast time of the 32 cars in attendance on the final night of points. Geoff Wilson, Tom Newquist, Jay Fiene, and Roger Long took heat race victories.

The dash victory went to Roger Long. The semi feature victories went to Bob Thoennes, and Mark Anderson.

The support classes produced two first time victories for drives this year at Fairbury. In the modified division, Rick Thomas put his #23 Thomas Recyclers modified into victory lane. In the street stock finale, Loren Haberkorn took the win.

As the final night of points concluded, the following drivers have accomplished a goal that most drivers never realize, a track championship. In the late models, Gary May of Minonk, IL claimed the track championship, in the only division to actually need the final night of points to decide the winner. In the modifieds, Lance Dehm, and the D1 Motorsports team of Chatsworth, Illinois took home the season championship, and in the Street Stock division, Gary Turpin of Bloomington, took the championship.

Next up for the Fairbury American Legion is the season ending 10th Annual Prairie Dirt Classic, paying $10,000 to win, along with $1,000 to start for the 60 lap feature. This year also marks the richest payoff in the history of the Fairbury American Legion Speedway. It will also coincide with the Prairie Dirt Classic by Chili Man Chili, at the Route 66 Raceway, in Joliet, also paying $10,000 to win. The Joliet race pays $500 to start the 40-lap feature. Both races also will feature a $15.00 admission for the fans, as a token of appreciation for their support.
