HERR DOES ALL-NIGHTER FOR FIRST SPRING SPORTSMAN WIN OF 99

MECHANICSBURG, PA - Following a wild night of qualifying which resulted in six red flags, Frankie Herr of Carlisle persevered and powered to his first win of the season at Silver Spring Speedway on Saturday night in the 25-lap Super Sportsman feature.

For Herr, who has two additional wins on the Sportsman tour at the wheel of the Highlands Tire Service No. 3, the victory marked the sixth of his career at the track.

Ron Little of Dover made a last-lap pass to win his third 20-lap Late Model feature of the season, while Tim Fedder won his second 20-lap Street Stock main event of the season.

Silver Spring Speedway will present an open wheel doubleheader featuring Super Sportsman and 358 Sprints on Saturday, August 28 beginning at 7 p.m.

A three-car melee involving Pat Cannon, Paul Troutman and Dave Neuman occurred on the initial start of the Super Sportsman feature. For the complete restart, polesitter Dave Myers powered into the lead and was trailed by outside front row starter Bill Heckert.

On the fourth lap, fifth-place starter George Riden advanced to second and on lap 13 swept underneath Myers for the lead coming off turn four. A circuit later, however, Frankie Herr, who started 15th, made the same move for the lead coming off turn four.

Once in front, Herr began to stretch his lead over Riden. Then 13th-place starter John Stoner stormed into second on a lap 21 restart and set his sites on the leader.

Stoner’s charge came up short when he settled for second behind Herr. Leroy Martin, Riden and Tim Leiphart completed the top five.

Polesitter Pat Beard took the lead at the start of the Late Model feature and came close to winning his first career Late Model race. For most of the event, Beard was chased by fourth-place starter Gary Potts.

It wasn’t until the 17th lap when both 11th-place starter Gene Wrightstone and 15th-place starter Ron Little moved into second and third, respectively, and became threats to the leader.

With two laps remaining, Little raced into second and reeled in the leader. On the final lap, Little made an exciting pass by Beard using the outside lane coming off turn four to take the checkered flag. Beard finished second, while Wrightstone, Potts and Rich Myers completed the top five.

Third-place starter Randy Askey powered into the lead at the start of the Street Stock feature and was tracked down by seventh-place starter Tim Fedder. On the seventh lap, Fedder drove by Askey for the lead.

At the halfway point, Fedder stretched his lead to a half straightaway over Dene Light. In the final two laps, Light and current point leader Kirby Sites moved within striking distance of the leader, only to have the caution flag unfurl with one lap to go.

For the last-lap chase to the checkered flag, Fedder held off Light by half a car-length for the win. Light finished second, followed by Sites, Askey and Sam Gipe
