RACEWAY 7 NEWS RELEASE

David Scott takes Late Models, Todd Roncaglione tops York Series at Raceway 7

Conneaut, Ohio, (August 20)  It took David Scott just under seven minutes to win his second feature of the season Friday night at Raceway 7.  The Garland, PA driver took just six minutes and 51 seconds to run from the pole position to the feature win in the non-stop, 20 lap Maloney Tool and Mold Late Model event. The York Triathlon Series made their first-ever visit to Raceway 7, with a field of 46 cars on hand.  If one is going to win their first-ever race at their home track, what better time to do so than when the biggest race is held for your division?  That's what Todd Roncaglione did in the "Buckeye Challenge" sponsored by General Aluminum.  The Linesville, PA driver took the lead on lap 16 from Bobby Powell and won by nearly a full straight at the end of the 40 lap distance.  Other winners on the program of racing were Dan McDonald of Girard, PA in The Bolt Place Limited Late Models; Bob Pifer of Andover, OH in the Fame Manufacturing Street Stocks; and Jim Hyde of Springboro, PA in the Steve's Auto Body Four Cylinders.

The 20 lap Maloney Tool and Mold Late Model feature started with David Scott and Rusty  Whitmore on the front row.  Scott immediately moved into the lead, with third starting Rick Briggs moving in to second.  Briggs closed in to Scott's back bumper by lap 5, as the green flag racing continued.  Third running Whitmore had his hands full with Rob Blair, as the Davies brothers of Dutch and Ron raced for fifth.  Point leader Ron Davies experienced problems on lap 8, and was forced to the pits.  Blair had moved by Whitmore at this point, and tried to gain ground on Briggs as Scott now started to pull away.  Eleventh starting Chub Frank was marching to the front, taking fourth on lap 14.  As Scott extended his lead, Briggs and Blair raced for second as the non-stop laps clicked by.  Scott raced home to take the feature win, his second of the season.  On the final lap, Blair was able to pass Briggs to steal second.  Frank came home fourth, and Dick Barton charged from 12th starting spot for fifth.  Dan Armbruster, Matt Urban, Whitmore, Dutch Davies, and Bill Cunningham rounded out the top ten. Qualifying heat race wins went to Dick Barton, Chub Frank, and Merle Terry.

The 40 lap Buckeye Challenge sponsored by General Aluminum marked the first-ever visit to Raceway 7 for the York Triathlon Series Stahl Modifieds.  The main event started with Coy Brothers Dash Winner Bobby Powell flanked by Hugo Litwiler.  Lap 1 saw Powell taking the early lead, with Todd Roncaglione moving from third starting spot to second.  At this point, a big turn three tangle brought out the red flag, with 11 cars involved in the incident.  The 77 of Jack Andrew had his fuel cell punctured, causing a delay to burn the spilled fuel off of the race track.  Powell and Roncaglione raced for the lead on the restart, as seventh starting Alan Dellinger joined the lead battle before spinning on lap 4.  Following a lap 6 restart, the battle for the lead continued with Roncaglione working Powell for the top spot.  During an extended green flag period, the leaders approached lapped traffic on lap 15.  Working the traffic, Roncaglione was able to get by on the outside and took over the top spot on lap 16, as Litwiler was also able to get by Powell.  A Jim Abbott spin on lap 19 forced a yellow which would be the last one in the event.  Roncaglione resumed in the lead back to green, as the battle was for second
with Powell taking the spot on lap 21.  The race for second continued, as Litwiler took it back on lap 26.  Roncaglione continued to extend his lead, and was in front by nearly a full straightaway when the checkered flag waved.  The winner stood in victory lane with a ski boot on his left foot, as he had just gotten a cast taken off following a wreck here about a month ago.  Litwiler was second, his first race back in a month after having his car totaled in the same wreck where Roncaglione was injured.  Powell came home third and will continue to lead the York Triathlon Series point standings.  After a spirited duel for position through the whole second half of the race, Jim Bertges held off Rick Prosser for fourth place.  Alan Dellinger, Jay Watson, Jeff Rudrick, Russ Dunn, and Jeff Taylor completed the top ten.  Crone Mechanical Heat Race winners were Jeff Sharp, Chuck List, Powell, Litwiler, and Roncaglione.  Powell was the winner of the Coy Brothers Trucking Dash, with added purse from General Aluminum.  Two Last Chance races were run, with Joel Watson and Dale Applebee taking wins.

The 15 lap The Bolt Place Limited Late Model feature with added purse from Roberts Trucking went to point leader Dan McDonald for the fifth time this season.  Steve Hollabaugh took the early lead from the pole, with McDonald quickly up
to challenge after starting third.  Hollabaugh held off all challenges until a restart on lap 8.  McDonald made a strong bid to the outside on this restart, and was able to move in front when it appeared that Hollabaugh's car lost power briefly, dropping him to fourth.  McDonald pulled away from the field to score the win, as he extended his point lead substantially.  Second in points Mike Stoneman was an early dropout and finished last.  Chub Frank substituted for Dave McLaughlin in the M1, and drove from tenth to finish second.  Tom Bonanno was a close third, ahead of Hollabaugh and John Buzzard.  Brian
Huffman, Brad Fiesler, and Bonanno took the heat race wins, and Bill Henry took the Last Chance Race.

The 12 lap Fame Manufacturing Street Stock feature went to Bob Pifer for the third time this season.  Rich Howell quickly took the early lead after starting third, before a yellow flag waved on lap 2.  When Howell got out of shape on the restart in turn two, eighth starting Pifer was quick to capitalize, taking over on lap 3.  Ninth starting Bill Hanna moved to second on lap 8, and closed in on Pifer.  But Pifer held on to score the win, with point leader Hanna second.  Tony Hyde came from 22nd starting spot to get third, ahead of Howell and Bobby Whitling from the tail on lap 4.  Chuck Sullivan, Hanna, Howell, and Pifer took heat race wins, while Brian Counselman took the Last Chance Race.

The 10 lap Steve's Auto Body Four Cylinder feature went to Jim Hyde, who earned his eighth straight feature win.  Dan Osborne took the early lead from third starting spot.  He led until a lap 6 yellow flag period, when he retired to the pits.  That moved 11th starting Hyde to the lead, where he held off a strong challenge from Dennis Lenney to extend his winning streak.  Mark Kitinoja was third, with Turk Kahler and Darren Buell right behind.  Osborne and Kahler took the heats.

Each feature winner earned bonus money from General Aluminum, and Biscotti's Restaurant and Winery.  It was a busy night at the races to say the least, as a record number of cars turned out to race.  A grand total of 156 drivers took part in the program, breaking down to 23 Late Models, 46 York Series Modifieds, 30 Limited Late Models, 40 Street Stocks, and 17 Four Cylinders.  Those 156 cars ran a combined total of 17 heat races, one dash, 4 Last Chance Races, and five features.  These 27 races combined for a total of 263 laps of racing.  Despite a few periods of light rain showers, the racing program was able to continue.

Racing action continues at Raceway 7 as the season is quickly drawing to a close.  The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series will make their fourth and final visit of the season on August 27; for a 50 lap, $5000 to win feature race.  Bossard-Crawford GM will sponsor the Super 7 Shootout, for the top money earners from the four MACS races run this season at Raceway 7.  The Grand Finale program will end the 1999 racing season on September 3, with Fireworks and a Demo Derby bringing down the curtain on the final racing program of the 1900's.  All five divisions will be in competition each night.  Raceway 7 is located six miles south of I-90 on Ohio Route 7.  For more information, call the track phone on race day at 440-594-2222, or visit the Raceway 7 web site at www.raceway7.com.
