PORT ROYAL SPEEDWAY

 

THOMPSON ,SHUEY, SHOOP, STOLL, POWELL WIN PORT ROYAL FEATURES

Len Thompson emerged victorious after a torrid battle on the final lap to come away with his second win of the year at Port Royal Speedway Saturday August21. Todd Hestor jumped from his fourth starting spot to take the initial lead and opened up a sizable edge. Todd Shaffer moved into second and ran Hestor down, taking the top spot on the eleventh circuit. The only yellow of the event flew on lap 15 and on the restart Thompson got by and assumed the top spot. Lance Dewease moved into second and put pressure on Thompson as the two raced through lapped traffic. In turns 3 and 4 on lap 23, Thompson drifted high and allowed Dewease past as the two received the white flag. As the two frontrunners entered the first turn, Thompson made a daring move to regain the lead and was able to keep his advantage to secure his third career win at the speedway. Dewease came home second, while Shaffer held on for third- Keith Kauffman made a late race pass of teammate Hester for fourth. Hestor continued his strong late season showing to get fifth. Randy Wolfe, Cliff Brian, Shawn Keen, Mike Wagner. and Rod Stroup rounded out the top ten. Hestor and Wolfe won the heats and Dewease was the winner of the special Australian Pursuit. 22 sprints were in the pits.

In the 20 lap Gray’s Auto Parts late model main, point leader Chris Shuey survived several challenges by Scotty Haus to capture his third win of the year. Second generation driver Eric Kauffman took the early lead but gave up the point to Jeff Bryner on lap 4. Bryner had his mount out front until he spun on the tenth lap, handing the lead to Shuey. With Haus running second, the two waged a tremendous war over the second halt of the race but the running order didn’t change. Jeff Smith came from deep in the field to nail down the third spot, while Tony Adams rode home fourth and Brian Shuey got fifth. Sixth through tenth were Jeff Rine, Mike Hess, Steve Campbell, Kenny Dickson, and Scott Lupfer. Hess, Haus, and C. Shuey won heats, while Tim Gray won the Consey. 28 late models were on hand.

Dick Shoop led all 12 laps of the Stong’s Auto Part! HP Engines pro stock feature for his first win of the season. The win was not easy as Shoop had to tight off repeated bids by two time winner Jason Schmidt, one time winner Bill Powell, and former track champion Todd Snook. Shoop was able to hold all challenges for the victory. Schmidt, Powell and Snook followed him closely across the line and Tom Krape finished fifth. Krape and Powell won heats. 22 pro stocks were trackside.

The makeup 10 lap 4 cylinder pure stock feature saw John Stoll lead from wire to wire. Sonny Williamson was second, with Dale Kreiser coming home third Ralph Dishong in fourth and Mike Wagner completing the top five. Stoll and Williamson won the heats, 23 4 cylinders took part in the program.

Bill Powell took his third 30 lap Enduro dash win of the year. Todd Eby ran second, Butch Renninger got third, Eric Goshorn came home fourth, and Adam Yetter rounded out the top five.

Port Royal will back in action next Saturday night with sprints, the Hub City qualifier for the Gray’s Auto Parts late models and the Stong’s Auto Parts/HP Engines pro stocks slated for action This will be the final kids night of the season with big foot, big wheel and bicycle races for the youngsters. 25 bikes will be given away to lucky fans. It will also be Stroehmann bakery night and the bike races will be sponsored by Gray’s All-O-Matic Transmissions. Race time is 7P.M. See you at the Port!
