McGuire Scores Double Victories at Eriez

By Jay Pees

(August 22) Pat McGuire led flag to flag to win his second trip to Eriez’s Speedway’s Victory Lane in the Late Model feature Sunday night. McGuire built a near quarter-lap lead at the finish in the race which saw but one caution, for the stalled car of Steve Halpainy. Chasing Eriez point leader McGuire the distance was circuit leader Matt Urban. Urban had gotten by second starting Merle Terry on lap one, but never got within striking distance of McGuire. John Lobb also got by Terry for third. Following Terry in fifth was rookie Andy Kania. Rod Maloy, Rich Gardner, Chad Ruhlman, Dan Maxim and Randy Lobb filled out the top ten. McGuire, Terry and Urban won the heat races.

The Late Model feature was McGuire’s second triumph of the evening as he also prevailed over the eighteen-car Limited Late Model field. Charlie Robinson led the field to Spanky Hall’s green flag and proceeded to build a large lead on the field while McGuire was working his way through the pack from his tenth starting position. With the white flag waving, Robinson encountered lapped traffic and was unable to hold off the charge of McGuire, who won the race by the length of his hood. Robinson, who had won his first-ever feature just a few weeks ago, had to settle for a disappointing second with Jake Lechtner third and Chris Hackett fourth. Outside front row starter Bill Catania, Jr was fifth in the race which was run start to finish under the green flag. Bryan Downes and Ron Olson won the heat races.

Don McGuire, brother to Pat, made it a family night as he won the Sportsman feature over Ted Kosinski and Robert J. Nocero. McGuire grabbed the lead from Nocero on lap six and was never headed. Randy Parmenter was fourth with Norm Kloszewski fifth. Dave Eades had engine failure at coming out of turn four for the checkers and burst into flame at the finish line. The fire was quickly extinguished without any injury to Eades. Gary Foster and Vern Plymier won the qualifying heats.

Dewey Kinnear started from the pole and immediately built a sizable lead until mechanical trouble halted his run at the front of the pack at the completion of lap eight. On the restart Rush Firestone assumed the lead and held it until Kevin Heslop got by on lap ten. Heslop, a rookie to the division, went on to win his first Cadet feature over Firestone. Circuit point leader Bryan Emory was third with defending champion Greg Fenno fourth. Chad Carlson, winner of ten features on the circuit this season was fifth.

Randy Learner came out of the second row to lead the opening seven laps of the second Cadet feature. On lap eight Travis Garske got by the leader and held on for his first win of the season at Eriez. Chris Withers had a fine run for second with Jim Hilyer third. Learner wound up fourth with John Pencille fifth. Both Learner and Pencille are rookies to the division.

Heat races were won by Marty Beal, Craig Krol and Jim Hilyer. Wade Slaney won the Run for the Money race for last week’s winners.

The Spectator drivers had their season championships with Chris McDonald scoring the second feature victory of his young career only one week after first breaking into the Winner’s Circle. Mike Munson wound up second with Bill Baker, Jr third.

Justin Carlson led flag to flag in winning his Championship trophy with Scott Coon making a challenge in the waning laps, but settling for second. Brandon Tolan was third.

Derrick Dickerson led the first five laps of the final Spectator Championship and then turned the lead over to Lou DiDenisio, who held it just one circuit. Bill Bane then spent one lap at the front before making way to eventual winner Aaron Jelley. The win was Jelley’s second of the season at Eriez. Point leader Chris Sutton made a charge on the final lap, but could not catch Jelley. Jim Kennerknecht nosed out DiDenisio at the flag for third. Twenty-one cars started the event which required only one caution.

Rod Round, Ray Churchill, Mike Mitchell, and Jelley won the heats.
