Shuey wins late model National Open
By Steve Inch
SELINSGROVE, PA (June 27, 1999) - Chris Shuey of Orefield wired the field for an
exciting win in the 30-lap inaugural Late Model National Open Sunday night at
Selinsgrove Speedway.
The win marked Shuey's third of the season and of his career at the Snyder
County oval at the wheel of the BCR Construction No. 21 and was worth $3,000.
The event, sponsored by Aubrey Alexander Toyota & Alexander
Pontiac-Buick-Cadillac-GMC, drew a field of 31 top Late Model teams, with Steve
Campbell of Sunbury setting fast time with a lap of 21.763.
Doug Esh of Lancaster also wired the field for his first 20-lap 358 Sprint Car
win of the season, while Kyle Bachman of Selinsgrove won his second 12-lap Pro
Stock feature of the year.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present the Keystone Pretzels PA Speedweek Finale for
Sprint Cars this Sunday, July 4. Gates will open at 5 p.m., with time trials for
Sprint Cars slated to begin at 7 p.m. Also on the racing card will be Pro
Stocks.
Polesitter Jim Yoder lost control of his race car in the second turn on the
initial start of the Late Model Open. A second attempt saw middle-of-the-pack
starters Terry Neitz and Mike Lupfer also collide in turn two.
Outside front row starter Chris Shuey powered into the lead and completed the
first full lap with fifth-place starter Jeff Smith trailing him in second. The
red flag unfurled for a multi-car pileup in the second turn on a lap three
restart; no drivers were injured and most were able to rejoin the race.
When the race resumed, Shuey and Smith broke away from the pack, while
third-place starter Jim Bernheisel, fourth-place starter Scott Haus and
seventh-place starter Bobby Croop competed in the top five.
On the 13th lap, Smith's car lost power on the frontstretch and coasted into the
pit area. At the midway point, Haus, who inherited second at the expense of
Smith's misfortune, began to close in on the leader.
In the final ten laps, Haus moved within striking distance of the leader in
lapped traffic, while Croop raced a distant third. On several occasions, Haus
attempted to pull alongside of the leader but to no avail.
At the checkered flag, Shuey was victorious by a slim margin over Haus, Croop,
eighth-place starter Carl Billet and sixth-place starter Steve Campbell.
The start of the 358 Sprint feature was marred by several flips. Tenth-place
starter Ron Kramer flipped his racer when another car slid across the race track
and collected Kramer's in turn four. The second incident saw both Mike Rabold
and Bob Hagan turn over their racers after colliding in the same spot. No
drivers were injured.
Polesitter Doug Esh completed the first lap and drove a comfortable race at the
front of the pack. Sixth-place starter Greg Leiby stormed into second and closed
in on the leader until he struck a wrecked car in turn four on lap three.
For the restart, Esh was trailed by second-place starter Joe Whitcomb and
fourth-place starter Troy Whitesel. On the fifth lap, Whitesel moved into second
and began to reel in the leader. On lap 12, however, fifth-place starter Terry
Leinginer began to show a lot of speed in his car and powered into second.
At the checkered flag, Esh was victorious by a straightaway over Leininger,
Whitesel, Whitcomb and Tracy Templin.
Polesitter Dave Inch took the lead at the start of the Pro Stock main event.
Matt Johnson, who started second, raced second for the first two laps before
sixth-place starter Kyle Bachman stormed into the runner up position.
Bachman tracked down the leader and made a pass for the front spot using the
outside lane on the backstretch on lap four. Current point leader Dave Brouse
started 12th and quickly moved into second by the midway point.
Behind Bachman and Brouse, a close battle for third unfolded between Tim Krape
and Gary Kerstetter. On lap nine, Bachman and Brouse began to see-saw for the
lead as the top four drivers raced wheel-to-wheel to the finish.
With two laps remaining, Krape moved into second but could not find enough
horsepower to get around the leader. Bachman took the checkered flag ahead of
Krape, Brouse, Kerstetter and Inch.
